We had the good fortune of connecting with Desarai Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Desarai, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I decided to start my own business, because I was called to buy back my time and pursue other dreams. Dreams that would provide products that would enhance another woman’s life and lifestyle.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Style Intent is an online clothing store that believes ambitious and passionate women deserve luxury garments that offer flexibility and versatility to their wardrobes. It should allow them to effortlessly command any work or pleasure engagement whether they are going for “casually elegant” or “subtly sexy.” Style Intent seeks to celebrate the rich history and cultural impact of women of color, especially black women. The cultural impact of our silhouettes is what fuels the brand. Young black women need to be adorned in luxury garments. We are descendants of Kings & Queens. We celebrate that innate power that women of color possess, and eagerly watch as the next generation of women use that energy as they aim at higher positions of power. My journey in creating Style Intent closely follows my own journey in finding my own feminine power. I’ve borrowed from my own life experience as well as those of the powerful women that have been around me. I’ve been blessed to stand in the same space as some of some pretty powerful women. My business journey has been one hell of a learning curve as well as also being sprinkled with a little bit of Hollywood magic. This journey has not been easy, but “anything in life worth having is worth working for.” – Andrew Carneige Overcoming challenges is about overcoming a lack of patience, mixed with persistence, tenacity, focus, and time. Being a creative you always figure out another route. No is never the end unless you decide that it’s so. “You just keep swimming.” – Finding Nemo . Cliché, I know, but when it’s only you at times working you’ll need an affirmation or two to keep you focused and charged. What I want the world to know about me is not important. I don’t personally need the recognition. Validation is for parking. What I want the world to know about my business is that it is a gift to the amazing women of color that go unnoticed and undervalued on a daily basis. However, they make up the fabric of most of all the good that is done in the world. We’ve all heard the saying: “If you want to get it done, have a black woman do it.” While there are so many layers of that statement that can be deemed problematic it’s also a moment to acknowledge all the work that has been done. Style Intent is a gift to women of color to not only celebrate and adorn themselves, but let them know that they are seen and heard.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting the first place I’d take them to the beach and then have dinner at a beach restaurant after we’d rested and cleaned up. The rest of the time in LA we’d do some if not all of the typical LA things: – Runyon and smoothies after on Melrose. – Universal City Overlook & Local Taco Truck/Food Truck Night – CityWalk & Universal Studios – Malibu Beach or Dockweiler Beach Bonfire – Grand Central Market for lunch after shopping in Santee Alley – Bottega Louie Downtown for Dinner & Rooftop Bar – Drive through Rodeo Drive, Beverly Hills, & Bel Air to see the houses – A Day At Disneyland or California Adventures – Griffith Park Observatory & LA Zoo – Studio Tour & Laker Game at the Staples Center – K-Town or Little Tokyo for dinner – Beach Hopping (Santa Monica, Venice, Hermosa, Manhattan, or Laguna Beach) – Museum of Ice Cream & Drinks at the Standard – LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art) – Laugh Factory & Dinner somewhere on Sunset – Make friends with people that you find at these places. You’d be surprised what people do for a living and how much they’re willing to hang out to continue the vibe. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Wow, where do I even begin?!? I’d first like to thank The Universe for such a crazy and eventful experience that I’ve had here in LA. I am forever grateful! I would not have even received this shoutout had I not listened to that inner voice and followed it here. So let’s start there! As far as the physical entities I’d like to thank, I have a laundry list. However, for times sake I will keep the list short and thank those who have directly impacted my new success: Style Intent. I’d like to warmly thank the Inland Empire Women’s Business Center For Entrepreneurship (IEWBC) for providing such an engaging platform to not only learn, but network and grow my business. The IEWBC provided me the tools to marry my creativity with business and entrepreneurship. Within this organization I came across some amazingly gifted minds, notably Claudine Papillon & La’Vonne Shields. These two women helped guide many aspects of my business while juggling the brain children of many other women seeking out their expertise. In regards to books, sheesh, it could take a while to get through the list but here are few that have helped shape my success: “The Alchemist” – Paulo Coelho, “The 4 Agreements” – Don Miguel Ruiz, “The Wealthy Gardener” – John Soforic, “Blue Ocean Strategies” – Renée Mauborgne, “Think & Grow Rich”- Napoleon Hill, “Ask & It Is Given” – Abraham Hicks, and so many others. I wholly believe that knowledge is power. The library and I are no strangers.
