We had the good fortune of connecting with Desiree’ Irving and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Desiree’, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Like most things in my life, risk is a part of balanced equation. We will all create some endearing moments, as well as some tragic moments. We will relish in reaching higher levels, as we would dread the motions of lower levels. Likewise, risk is a part of a balanced equation with it’s counterpart, safety. In business, it is smart to keep things safe, create boundaries and consistent routines to make better business habits. Safeties guarantee the life cycle of the your works. But, in my experiences, risks can be equally productive. With enough thought, risks can help you level up in ways you may have not seen otherwise. The growth that you can acquire from risks can be life altering, and for the best. And in the balanced equations that safety and risks bring, you inevitably see that everything works out as it should.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My art is my vibe, my craft. I don’t what I would be doing if I wouldn’t be able to create. I have worked many times in a regular 9-5, and it was never fulfilling. It was as if my soul ached and felt depleted after every shift. When I was about 23, I finally found the courage to respond to the call of entrepreneurship. Being a beauty entrepreneur has not been easy, but quite challenging and honestly, I believe that’s what gets me through. Being challenged and put to the test of being everything that your small business calls for really instilled a difference since of purpose and ambition into my being. And the combination of striving towards my goals and going level for level is easily what go me where I am professionally. I am definitely my biggest critic, so I was always challenging myself, as well as constantly seeking advice from likeminded professionals. I’ve seen a lot and have a million testimonies because of those events in my life. The greatest lesson that keeps repeating itself is ‘hold on and never give up’. Even though it is a huge cliche, it shows up time and time again, presented in a different scenario but holding the same powerful meaning. Even in these past few months, we have seen so much change. But as long as we are still here, that means that we still have one more chance. DESiRV Beauty is meant to show BIPOC is ways that may not always been seen in mainstream media. Yes, there are diverse happenings that are forthcoming as of late, but DESiRV Beauty will always stand as a space where the unfiltered flavor and beauty will consistently shine. DESiRV Beauty is being built to grow into a global community that will constantly embrace the wholeness and the right to tale up space. It’s a new day, and the earth DESiRVs this beautiful shift..

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
There are so many things to see in SoCal! So we would definitely have to start our way further out, then work our way back in.. Definitely would have to take a beach tour. One day we would go to Treasure Island in Laguna, then another day we would eat seafood on the Redondo Beach pier. DTLA is another vibe and an all day adventure. We would start out going to the Last Bookstore. Lunchtime would probably call for Ramen Hood in Grand Central Market, especially since its cooler these days. The Santee Alley would also be an attraction to find some really great shopping. A dinner night may end up in Koreatown for some delicious fried chicken at BBQ Chicken or, finding what your taste buds fancy at the California Marketplace. Either choice is a huge win!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are many people that I owe my life times three thousand to, but I want to emphasis the impactful women in my life. If I attempt to name them all, I will surely forget someone, and I can’t afford that debt. So the cliche but undeniable response is my mom – Tammy Louise Gilbraith – Irving. A beautiful and rare flower, that gives you greater gifts as the season go by!
