We had the good fortune of connecting with Desiree Miller and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Desiree, how do you think about risk?
You have to take risks in life to create something great. Things don’t just happen because you wished them to be true. You’ve got to trust your gut, step outside of your comfort zone and go for it!
Risks can be opportunities, surprises or even just a matter of trusting your gut. I took a risk moving my family from California to Minnesota when I got the opportunity to be a Marketing Manager for Target Corp. as a career. I took a risk starting a small business when the economy is upside down. I took a risk with my time when I decided to start a Masters program while juggling my new mommy duties, my career and a sprinkle business. Risks give us the opportunities we need to get to get the most of life. You can quite literally, do anything.
What should our readers know about your business?
My name is Desiree. My husband Ricky is my college sweetheart. My daughter Emory is literally what completes me. My frenchie Cheez has the biggest personality.
And, I started dreaming about Sprink in January of 2021.
At the beginning of the pandemic, I watched cookie decorating videos constantly. There was something so satisfying about watching a cookie artist outline, flood and add details to sugar cookies. After I watched every single @hol_fox video, I made my first quarantine purchase – a Kitchen-Aid mixer.
My first batch of cookies weren’t great, but I enjoyed every step of the process. I took my time trying new techniques and would challenge myself with intricate shapes. Next thing you knew, I had LOADS of spare cookies on hand that my husband and I would treat ourselves to – a delightful problem to have. I started packaging the spare cookies and sending them to friends and family across the country. It was a way I stayed connected to home (and humanity) during those lock down months.
I quickly learned that I didn’t have adequate space for my new found cookie cutter collection, and that shipping small batches of cookies was fun, but expensive. I shifted my creative energy into what I loved most about the cookie making process – decorating.
Shortly after, I came across @neuroticmom and watched every single cake decorating video she had! I started following all kinds of cake and cookie decorators and discovered this incredible community of bakers. From sharing tips, to cheering in the comments, to birthday hashtag group bakes – it was all so celebratory and encouraging. That’s when I knew that I found my people, my community, and now, my friends.
Believe it or not, there is something that I love even more than dessert: color. My career as a Marketing Manager has allowed me to make color, art and creativity a strategic priority in life. Developing Sprink was a perfectly challenging creative outlet that tested everything I have ever learned about art and business.
So here we are. Sprink is a culmination of all of my favorite things, and all of my talents. I hope Sprink brings you a little extra magic to your big life moments and your small, just-because celebrations. It’s already given me so much joy in my everyday life. Some may call it a “silver lining”, but I call it “extra sprinkles”.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If someone’s visiting me in LA, we’re going to Roscoe’s for breakfast, Kogi truck for lunch, and Mama Lu’s in Alhambra for dinner.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom has always had big dreams. Growing up, she always told us that we could be and do anything we wanted in life. Then, she showed me that it was possible by creating a brand and a business out of nothing, with nothing. Having her support with every decision I’ve made in life has given me the confidence to take risks and believe in myself.
