We had the good fortune of connecting with Devon Sedrick and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devon, career-wise, where do you want to be in the end?
I think this is one of the hardest questions to answer because my philosophy is about always expanding. Constantly reaching, expanding and trying new things. It’s hard for me to think of the “end goal” because then what? What comes after that? Nothing? Or do we just try on something new.

Right now my main focus and goals are around music and creating multiple brands. My goal is to bring to life what happens in my mind and my body and try to portray that through music and visual mediums so other people can see it and recognize the same feeling or experience within themselves. Alongside that I have a media and marketing company that I have to help push products and movements that I believe in. One of my clients is a functional mushroom gummy called OMFG Gummies that I really believe in. It is by far the best functional mushroom product on the market and I want to help it grow so that people can receive the benefits of the mushrooms. It’s absolutely incredible the impact that it’s had on my health and I want other people to experience that. I also have a client that is big in the ocean conservation space. The earth and the ocean are our homes and I love being a part of that, and encouraging us as a species to move towards things that are sustainable.

All that being said, I know there’s so much more for me to learn and explore and become interested in, so I guess I would say my end goal is to not have an end goal, to not pigeon hole myself, but to keep growing, expanding and exploring as much as possible.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
The most beautiful part of singing and creating music is the discovery of yourself. It takes time and exploration, trying on new things and a lot of seeing what doesn’t work, but when you find your voice, or your style, that’s where things start to take off. The world needs your art, because it’s a unique perspective that only you can offer. I see a lot of artists trying to emulate other people that they look up to, and for a time that is really necessary and useful, but you have to break through and trust yourself at some point and that’s not easy.

I write and produce all of my own music, and occasionally bring in musicians that I trust and know that I can continue to hold true to my own perspective while simultaneously collaborating. It’s so important to find people that you can trust, so that you can continue to be yourself. It took me a long time to get signed to a label, and I was nervous because I didn’t want to lose myself or placate to someone else’s idea about me. Thankfully, an incredible label found me that supports LGBTQ+ artists and they have always encouraged me to be myself. I think this is kind of rare, but no matter what situation you find yourself in, ALWAYS fight to keep your voice, you need it, and so does the rest of the world.

I am really excited for the album to come out this summer and to go on tour. I have done small tours before, but this will be my first time touring in Europe and the US and I cannot wait to get back on the road.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I exist on the water. I lived on a sailboat for 5 years that I still have, so I would take my best friend out on a sunset cruise, with all of my favorite snacks and drinks. The next day we would go surf, lay on the beach and get as tan as humanly possible. I would take them to the TownHouse in Venice to listen to some funk and jazz. We would also be on dessert and food tour the entire time, Randy’s Donuts for sure, and then we’re eating as much as possible at Grand Central Market.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to all my friends and family. I know it’s cliche, but I have the most supportive network of humans around me. I don’t know what I’d do without the lot of them.
