Meet DeWitt Fleming Jr | Performer and Business Owner

We had the good fortune of connecting with DeWitt Fleming Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DeWitt, what do you attribute your success to?
I didn’t necessarily have a thought process. I created something out of necessity for myself, and found out that others really wanted it as well and so I decided to sell it. I started out really small with just word-of-mouth and Instagram post. Then the business kind of organically grew on its own.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a performing artist. I am an actor, singer, dancer and drummer, but most people know me as a Tap Dancer. I got to where I am today through a lot of hard work, dedication, and never slowing down to get acknowledged. It wasn’t easy. I have supported myself since I graduated high school. I put myself through college by working and going to school at the same time. when other students would just go to school and then work on their craft when they weren’t in class I unfortunately had to go to work. So I lost a lot of sleep trying to make sure I kept up with not only the other students in my college, but also the other professional performers in New York City. This continued after college when I got a desk job. I never saw what I was going through as challenges. I’ve always had to work hard, and so, although things may have seemed challenging to others, it was just a part of life for me. The lessons I’ve learned along the way are that nothing ever is what it seems, and to make sure you’re environment is surrounded with positivity, love and people who inspire and motivate you. I want people to know that I love what I do and I am the happiest when everyone around me is also happy. I work hard because I know that the results of my hard work is not only for me. I know there are many others that will benefit from my hard work, and that makes it all worth it. My brand was created with the intention of making sure Tap Dancers could create and be heard the way they wanted to be heard. There is a joy and satisfaction like no other when you feel like you have expressed yourself, and you have been heard.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
That’s a tough question for two reasons, one I live in New York City, which is always changing and there’s always something new. Also, there is so much to do. It’s almost impossible to be bored in New York City. The second reason that’s a tough question is because I don’t really go out a lot. Between working and spending time with my wife and kids, the time that I do have to go out I usually just go to a local bar or restaurant with my friends. In my opinion the best thing to do in New York City to have a great time is just walk around you’ll always bump into something exciting.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Jennie Harney-Fleming deserves a huge shout out. She has been with me every step of the way, and has done so much for my business. All of the graphics, logos, etc. were created by her.
