We had the good fortune of connecting with Kelli Carlson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kelli, how do you think about risk?
Risk and going for the unknown is the thrill, and taking calculated risks is what I try to get better at everyday. Every aspect of being an artist is a risk, there is only security if you create it. I go with the saying, “Opportunity dances with those already on the dance floor” (H. Jackson Brown). I practice separating risk from fear so I can take bigger leaps.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Art has been the backbone of joy in my life. Developing as an artist has its challenges, but the more I practice the more I appreciate the simple things in life and the beauty of nature. I am currently an artist in residence on the big island of Hawaii and my art reflects the colors, shapes, and freedom I feel in the jungle and ocean. Working with an architect, I am using recycled materials and looking at things from a different point of view. Using materials from preexisting structures and recycling old tool boxes are some of the things being featured in my next art show. I am the November 2020 featured artist at The Exhibit Gallery in Hilo, HI. Check it out there or online!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
The Venice Electric light Parade is not to be missed. Every Sunday before sunset a group of LA eccentrics gather under the Venice sign and ride up and down the coast glowing in the dark and blasting music. It really makes you say, “Only in LA!”
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a shout out to everyone who has helped me change into a clean lifestyle. Thank you to my family and friends who have helped me clean my mind and my heart. I feel like a rainbow with all new colors.
