We had the good fortune of connecting with Dez Ale and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dez, other than deciding to work for yourself, what was the single most important decision you made that contributed to your success?
The most important decision that I did for myself to be successful was betting on myself, and that goes for everyone. Drown out the noise and bet on yourself. You will only be able to persevere through adversity by believing in yourself and envisioning your own future. You have to be your biggest fan!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At the heart of our organization is our passion to progress and empower girls and women in the sports world. I was driven to start up Her Game because of how I witnessed and experienced first-hand the byproducts of gender inequity in sports, such as lack of visibility, access, and resources for girls and women, as opposed to our male counterparts. Working to reform structural systemic inequities is never easy, but when you are driven by genuine convictions, anything is possible! I believe in the work I do, and more importantly I truly believe in the abilities of these young girls and women both on and off the court. Throughout my experiences so far, I have learned that nothing worthwhile will ever come easily but if you believe in yourself and your calling, nothing can stop you except for you.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Theoretically, if this scenario was pre-COVID precautions when everything was open, I would take my best friend to a LA Sparks game! My best friend is very supportive of Her Game, as a former athlete herself. We would definitely make sure to hit up Roscoes or Dulans on our way to check out major sites of a local basketball scene. As an LA native, that is something that I feel like is so unique about my hometown; the talent range in Southern California is truly one of a kind!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The continuous growth and evolution of Her Game definitely would not be possible without the great depth of support from my family, friends and mentors. However, the influence of my sisters Rheina and Kristen have built the foundation of support which truly inspired me throughout my own journey through sports ultimately leading up to the inception of Her Game. Building off of each other’s experiences, wisdom, and empowerment contributed to the framework of Her Game and who I am today.
