We had the good fortune of connecting with Diamond Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diamond, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
When I originally was starting my own business, I always knew I wanted to be in the entertainment industry. I went from wanting to open a Women Owned Strip Club, to a Dance company, to an Event Planning Company. By the time, I landed on Event Planning, I was working in the catering industry and enjoyed producing events where attendees really enjoyed themselves. From the decor, to the service, to the food, to the drinks, to the music; it always warmed my heart to see people let their hair down & experience happiness in that moment. But sadly, I wasn’t able to see that many people who look like me, enjoying these moments. I also started to notice that in New York City, the Black community is constantly neglected despite the fact that we’re the originators of real New York City Culture, along with the Latinx community. I wanted a company to curate events that celebrate and uplift Black culture, Black people, and the Black experience in New York City. That’s also the same reason why I started my Podcast/Online Show “Politicin’: An NYC Podcast” (Episodes coming Summer 2022). Also, growing up in Brooklyn, NY, I wanted financial freedom. I wanted to have financial stability without having to be a slave to my career. I wanted to be able to work all while taking care of my mental, physical, and spritual well being, taking care of my loved ones, making memories with my loved ones, and giving back to the world.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I started this business to spread happiness and love to the people in my community. I wanted my community to have multiple safe spaces where we can enjoy ourselves and connect with one another. I also wanted to give back to help give my people some type of peace of mind. The Black Community’s mental health is an important issue for me. We suffer from hundreds of years of racism, oppression, and discrimination in this city let alone in this country and the very city that we grew up in shouldn’t be constantly trying to push us out but at the same time, exploiting our sauce. Nothing about starting a business is easy but I feel like it’s worth it. To impact someone’s life in a positive way is what my life mission is. We as Humans were put on this earth to love and help one another. There’s so much hate in the world and even more devastatingly, hate in the Black community. This is also where the mission for the Podcast/Online Show comes into play as well; to positively change the narrative. That hate in our community usually stems from hurt and we need to heal.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The love of my life, Keith, has been my biggest supporter from Day 1. Any accomplishment no matter how big or how small he always gives me my props. He’s been with me through all my long nights of brainstorming, planning, and organizing. He listens to all my ideas and always offers help in anyway he can. Constantly giving me comfort by wiping my tears on my bad days when I feel overwhelmed and reminding me I can do any and everything I put my mind to when I feel doubtful. He’s definitely invested countless of dollars into my business through its various stages and still experiences it as a customer too. Keith is always there cheering me on and I’m forever grateful to have him in my life, by my side.
