We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Garcia and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Diana, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
House of Darlings is not just a thread, we are a community and a movement that inspires others to believe that they can change the world. It didn’t start off as a fashion brand but rather I launched it as a holding place for all of my creative ideas that embody the single mission of helping those in need. The name comes from my alias “Darling” which I created years ago while working with some of the biggest artists in the world. And “house” comes from wanting to create a safe place where people can feel create, uplift, and inspire others.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Building House of Darlings has been one of the most challenging things I have ever done but it has taught me that one single person matters and if I can impact one person then I have reached success in my business. I launched my brand as a holding place for all of my creative ideas but it has turned into a global movement that inspires others to create ideas that help others. Having had over two decades in entertainment working with some of the biggest artists in the world, I’ve been able to use my influence to launch collections that help women and kids with the greatest needs. But I will say launching these collections would not have been possible without the support of incredible designers who have joined and supported my vision. Designing, sewing, and having enough inventory to support and fund the charitable initiative is incredibly challenging. I don’t have a background in fashion and I have had to recruit my family to help me sew dresses and skirts. Somehow my brand has impacted and supported over 100,000 women and kids over the past decade.
The biggest lesson I have learned is to not give up and ask for help. Even when people are not ready to help you, asking for help will inevitably connect you with the right person or people that will help you.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am beach person. I love the ocean so I would tell my best friend to go on a long walk with me in Manhattan Beach on the strand. It’s one of the most relaxing things I do on a daily basis but every single walk I am marveled by the peace and tranquilltiy. I would also say that we can stop by the Strand House and grab a bite and watch the sunset.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have had a beautiful community around me who support me all over the world but the person who ultimately inspired me to take the leap and start this brand is my best friend Alan who passed away right before I took my first trip to Africa. On this trip, I was going to physically open the maternity ward that I funded along with a few incredible moms and their stories. Alan knew I was on a journey of finding greater purpose in life. His passing prompted me to take the leap of faith and follow my mission to help those in need. I am currently writing a book that details and encourages others to take that leap and find their true happiness and purpose.
