We had the good fortune of connecting with Ivan Estrada and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Ivan, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor of building a successful brand is, first and foremost, figuring out who you are. In order to attract the type of clients or people that I want in my ecosystem or business, I needed to know first who I am before I could attract those type of people. We tend to attract the type of people that are just like us. It’s the people who share the same interest. Then I put together my brand, where I chose five specific brand pillars. These are the five things that I want my brand to stand for: technology, community, real estate, design, and international travel. So first I needed to figure out who I was as a brand and what I loved, because that has a lot to do with the longevity of a brand. Then it was about putting my brand pillars together. After that, I was able to create an avatar to successfully track those type of clients that I want.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The name of my company is called Brand With. It is a company that empowers entrepreneurs and creatives in finding their brand and their voice. There are three parts to Brand With: the first is Brand With Purpose, the book, which motivates and helps people do the “inside” work on discovering what their brand is. Secondly, there is Brand With Video, which is the video course that helps people get over the fears of being in front of the camera, how they look, and how they sound. Also, this course helps build brand pillars as well as create content for social media, website, and the blog. Lastly, there is Brand With Podcast, which is a podcast that interviews brand leaders who are bold, courageous, authentic people who have built amazing brands with very influential stories. We’re going to have callers call in and provide helpful tips regarding any of their branding problems. What sets us apart from others is that, there is no company out there at the moment that is helping entrepreneurs specifically in figuring out what their brand is – their personal brand, business brand, or corporate brand – from someone who does it, from entrepreneur to entrepreneur. There are companies here and there by the people who’ve been in the business and has pursued entrepreneurship before who are selling their services. For myself, what sets me apart is that, I know what it’s like. I’ve been in the trenches. I know as a personal entrepreneur what other entrepreneurs are in need of, especially when it comes down to video and media – in branding, these are extremely important. What I’m most proud and excited about is being able to help other colleagues, entrepreneurs, creatives walk the path that I went through, discovering my own voice. For myself it was a very long journey of a lot of self-help books, seminars, therapy, business coaches, and real estate coaches. Now I’m at a time of my life where I am proud of who I am, of the things that I’ve accomplished, and I can truly be as authentic as I possibly can be. And I want to be able to help other people do the same thing – help them crack through that facade and be able to speak their voice, do what they’re meant to be doing, and find their purpose. That is what I’m super excited about. No, it was definitely not easy getting to where I am today business-wise. I’ve faced a lot of challenges along the way. My story at one point, I used to be homeless. There are things that happen in our lives that really shape us, that add a layer of strength, courage, ambition, drive, and motivation. My life has been a journey of following and listening to the signs, listening to myself. I’ve been very lucky in being resourceful and building relationships/networks with people who have helped me along the way. People who have given up their time, and at times their money, to help me get to the next level in my business. Starting from being in the music industry as a child, to being a CPA at a major firm, to being a caterer part time, to a real estate agent. And now still a real estate agent, but also the CEO of a branding and marketing company. All the things I’ve learned along the way, I’ve passed on to my next business. I have learned from the mistakes, I know the things that work and the things that do not. Along the way, I’ve been able to really figure out who I am through the successes and challenges. Being an entrepreneur is not easy: there is so much sacrifice, risk taking; so much joy but also a lot of sadness and fear. There are so many different types of emotions that we have to endure and not allow those emotions to control us, but instead we need to control them. It is not easy, it is not for everyone. However, those who really want to be successful and are passionate and purposeful about what they are doing, they will find a way to get through that. Overcoming the challenges involved reaching out to my resources and being vulnerable enough to ask for help. That’s how you get through the challenges. As an entrepreneur, you can’t do everything. So you have to be able to ask for help and say, “I can’t do this”. The moment you say it, that is growth. That, for me, is how you overcome challenges. The lesson I’ve learned along the way is: asking for help. You always have to be a teacher and a student. I’m always going to be in the mindset of a student. Always learning by reading books, podcasts, and learning from others. Then there’s also teaching. In order to get more and to be able to make more space to get more from the world, you have to teach. You have to pass it on. The universe knows if you’re keeping it all to yourself, you’re not going to get more. It’s all about teaching others and giving back. It’s a huge component of why I like to be a team leader, to coach and train people. There’s a huge sense of satisfaction that allows you to open up to receive more, then give more. For me, that’s something I’ve learned along the way. What I want to world to know about Brand With is: this is a company from someone who knows what it feels like to be broken. To feel like everything is against you and there’s no one there to help you along the way. Right now what we’re going through, there’s a lot of sadness and loss of hope out there. My brand, Brand With, is about spreading the message of authenticity, finding your voice and being able to use it. In branding and marketing, unless you know who you are, you can’t attract the type of clients you want. When I hear, “I get all these bad clients. All these clients mistreat me.” it’s a reflection of who you are, it really is. So what I want the world to know about my company is, we’re a company that is run, not by dollars, but by heart. I run by my heart, I do things from my heart. I don’t look at the bottom line when I do certain things especially for this company, because I feel that if you do, then you lose the message. I want to help more than what is there financially for me in this. With video becoming such an important factor in branding and marketing for spreading the message on what people do, I’m here to help them. Helping to get over the fear of how they look, how they sound, judgment of others, being able to market themselves fully using the power of social media, being able to help them figure out who they are, what their key selling points are, and being able to amplify them. In order to find and amplify them, you have to figure out what they are first. I’m here to help those entrepreneurs figure out what makes them special, so that we can highlight that. For me, I realized what made me special were the things that I thought were holding me back in life. Those are the things that I’m here to help people find. That’s what sets my world apart. I’m honestly here to make a difference for all those who feel like they don’t have a voice, those who ever felt like they were being mistreated, weren’t smart enough, weren’t good looking enough, didn’t come from the right family, didn’t come from the right location. I’m here to help those people in finding who they are. That to me is huge.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to the beach where I meditate. I’m a huge avid for meditation. Being able to really be thankful. Go to the beach in the morning and just sit there and be at peace. Then I would take them out for a run – I’m a fitness individual, love to exercise. Then we would go have a nice organic shake – feed the body, feed the soul. Afterwards, I would take them to some of my favorite places. Things that make LA so special for me are the mountains, I love hiking. I love the Pacific Ocean, Malibu. There’s a sense of tranquility for me in these areas. I would obviously take them to where I grew up, Eagle Rock. Show them my school, where I came from. My mom’s house, which is the same house I was born and raised in. I love the movies, but unfortunately there are no movies right now. I love escaping for a little bit and traveling to freight lands and just sitting down with someone. And then we’d end with a nice dinner at a nice rooftop restaurant in Los Angeles overlooking the beautiful city that I’m very proud of being a part of. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to my business coach, Aaron Keith, who is the Founder & CEO of Buildify Systems and is a well-known consultant, business coach, and speaker.
