We had the good fortune of connecting with Diana Nuval and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diana, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risks are inevitable when you pursue an artistic or creative career so I am very familiar with them, I think for me one of the biggest risks I’ve taken in my life was moving to Los Angeles to progress in my career, which I am sure a lot of my fellow transplants could relate to. And I not only moved states, but I also decide to switch career paths halfway through, a huge risk! Naturally, there are moments of uncertainty that I still have about the risks that I’ve taken, but I think that if they are not taken, you stay in one note your whole life and I would rather have the opportunity to grow, even if it comes with a little fear. I am sure some of the risks I’ve taken and/or will take will lead to failure but even in failure, you can find lessons that will eventually lead to success! So I’d say take as many risks if you have the privilege to do so!

I started out working in the film industry right out of college. First in the art department and later in the costume department. And while I really enjoyed the craft of working behind the camera I could not scratch that itch of wanting to be in front of them. So when I moved to LA I made a pivotal change and started focusing my creative energy on Acting. Since I was pretty new to the game I started by doing the things I thought were “the right way” to start working in this industry. I quickly learned that there is no “right way” and that if I really wanted to act I did not have to wait for the opportunity to come to me I could make that opportunity for myself. Luckily, two of my classmates from my acting classes approached me to start a small collective (h.a.g.s) in which we would produce, direct, and act in short films that would give us more content for our reel or portfolio so that we could get more practice and also have projects attached to our name that could potentially lead to more opportunities ( grants, etc.) in the industry. My previous knowledge of working behind the camera really came in handy. So far, we have shot and completed one short, are in post-production for the other one, writing our third one, and conceptualizing our eventual feature film. Whether you’re working behind the camera or in front of it, you always need a team to back you up and that is something I have always appreciated about the art of filmmaking.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am vegan! And LA really makes it easy for vegans. So I would probably plan a vegan extravaganza! I would start the trip with brunch at Millies Dinner, they have the best vegan eggs, Then I would probably plan to hit up Soap Plant/ Wacko store for some fun souvenirs. I would then stop and go get’em, tiger, for some coffee and then hit up Jet Rag to do a little thrifting. For dinner, I would stop at Crossroads Kitchen, the food is so good there you will even forget it’s vegan. I would end the night at Bolita for some fancy Cuban cocktails.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would love to thank my fellow classmates at Playhouse West, specifically Kasey Elliot and Drew Galteland, who have pushed me out of my comfort zone and have inspired me to make my own projects instead of waiting for an opportunity to come. I would also like to thank my loving and supportive partner, Anthony Diaz, who believes more in me than I do!
