We had the good fortune of connecting with Dianna Novy and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dianna, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I first got into the wine business right out of college. I had an opportunity to try really good wine and I immediately knew that I wanted to become a winemaker. I moved to California from my home state of Texas at the age of 24. For the next 23 years, my now ex-husband and I built 2 very successful brands where we were winemaking partners – Siduri Wines and Novy Family Winery. In 2015 we were lucky enough to sell both brands.

We had great success as partners, but I had developed a desire to start a brand that was completely my own where I could make the wines in exactly the style that I enjoyed most. I named by brand Flaunt Wine Company and my first offering was a Sparkling Wine released in 2017. I have now grown the brand to include Pinot Noir and Rosé.

The word Flaunt has significant meaning to me as the name of my winery. This is the time in my life where I am venturing on my own and expressing myself through my own wines. I am showing what I enjoy most and what I am capable of by myself. It has been very empowering for me to have this opportunity to flaunt what I am most passionate about.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have a very close relationship with my grape growers. I love to spend time in the vineyards discussing what can be done there to increase the quality of the wine. I believe it is very important to be in the vineyards throughout the year to truly understand how the grapes are developing and to have a better understanding of the favor profile of the fruit before it ever gets harvested. I rely on my senses much more than I do on chemistry. The observations that I make throughout the growing season are what let me know how to deal with the fruit once it makes it to the winery. This style of farming and winemaking has come very naturally to me. I didn’t study viticulture or enology in college. I didn’t even discover fine wine until after I graduated. The time I have spent over the past 27 years in the vineyards has been a wonderful and thorough education.

I want the world to know that I have my own voice and my own style of winemaking. I am just at the beginning of expressing myself. Flaunt Wine Company is my opportunity to show what I’m all about!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend was coming for a visit, we would spend our time exploring all the fun to be had in Sonoma County. We would spend a couple of days wine tasting here in the Russian River Valley and probably get dinner at Willi’s Wine Bar in Santa Rosa. We could easily spend another day enjoying the tasting rooms and boutique shops around the square in downtown Healdsburg. Dinner would be at Valette for their amazing scallops en croute, or possibly at Bravas for their authentic selection of Spanish tapas. On another day, we would load up the kayaks on top of the Jeep and spend a day paddling on the Russian River from Healdsburg to Guerneville stopping to enjoy a picnic and some wine. We would definitely spend a day hiking out at the Sonoma Coast and rewarding ourselves with some fried avocado and fish tacos at the Fisherman’s Cove in Bodega Bay. If we time it right, we will also go tide pooling at Shell Beach while we are there. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My shoutout would be to my 3 wonderful kids, Christian 21, Amber 17 and Truett 15. They have been so incredibly supportive of me in making a name for myself. They let me know how proud they are and are always encouraging me to do more. They are everything!
