We had the good fortune of connecting with Dianne Miles and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dianne, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I realized when working for a big brand waxing chain I saw how the individuals coming in for the services were looked at by the company as numbers rather than individuals. Because of this I had many experiences with customers where they expressed displeasure from cold encounters with other waxers who pushed products and never got to know them or how they were feeling during the service. After my own experiences from getting waxed after high school and paying the high prices for an uncomfortable and rushed 15 minute wax, I wanted to be able to give people a more detailed and comfortable experience. Being able to give them a more personalized time and experience ensures people feel seen and happy to return by adding waxing into their monthly budget and self-care routine.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I have come to realize that finding your perfect waxer is like a relationship. I feel like what sets me apart from other businesses is my ability to connect and build bonds with my customers. I am so thankful to enjoy coming to work everyday and feeling like I am talking to friends all day and just happen to be doing a service along with it. Getting to get to know all my customers who come in and getting them talking helps distract them from the sometimes uncomfortable nature of the service. Knowing how each person is feeling throughout the entire service by checking in with them and making sure everyone knows about aftercare can change the way someone who has had a bad experience in the past or no experience at all want to come back. Also, having people be informed about whats coming next, comforts them during the service. Going in depth on how to do aftercare/why it’s important helps to ensure they follow the proper aftercare routine.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
When my best friend who lives out of town comes to visit, I love to take her to the places I know and love. The best breakfast spots around me for a sit down breakfast would probably be Bru Wiffle or 26 Beach. Typically for a sweet treat, I do love a good frozen yogurt spot! My all time favorite spot is Go Greek Yogurt by Santa Monica beach. It’s the best yogurt and toppings with the best view to go with it. After walking along the beach, we can take a small drive to Cafe Belen. I have personally met the owner and he is the sweetest guy who makes the most AMAZING sandwiches and more. Then spending some time around sunset, walking around the Waterside Plaza in Marina Del Ray and shopping at Barnes and Noble. To end off the night on a fun note, we would go to the Whaler in Venice for a pizza and a drink or to dance at the Bungalow.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The two most important people who helped me on this journey was my mom and boyfriend. Starting this business was not always smooth sailing and did sometimes take a mental toll on me. My mother has always shot for the stars with everything she has done. She has always been my biggest aspiration with her bigger than life personality and determination. Having her by my side to give me her opinions and advice on how she has made and run her successful businesses in the past has steered me in more customer focused directions. My boyfriend has been there to pick me up on my worst days to encourage and uplift me. Starting a business is hard when you strive for perfection and he has taught me patience and letting things happen naturally when I try to control things out of hands. Having him for bouncing ideas off of or to just getting reassurance has made him invaluable to my life and business.
