We had the good fortune of connecting with Diwata Komiks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Diwata, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
We realized that there was a lack of diversity and representation on the decision-making level in the comics industry. Being a creative group comprised of storytellers (filmmakers and comic book artists) we were looking to tell stories with authentic voices from our Filipino and Filipino-American backgrounds but realized that if were really looking to be represented as authentically as we would write ourselves, we needed to self-publish.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
At first glance, it’s clear that we’re different and we’re quite proud of that. We are a small team of multicultural and multi-generational creatives from vastly different backgrounds who were united by our passion for art and storytelling. Diwata Komiks was born from the need to find a platform to be able to tell our stories with our own unique voices through our love for comics.

We hope to bring, not just our stories, but also, a multitude of other amazing titles from across the world for comic book fans to discover and enjoy.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
For the US-based founders of Diwata Komiks (Mark, Erica, and Joe), we were brought together by a nonprofit organization called FilAm Creative that looked to foster creativity and collaboration in the Filipino-American Community.

For our Philippines-based founder Roland, he would like to credit Mario Limos of Esquire Philippines and a personal friend Ralph Vincent Pobre whose efforts on publishing the article led to finding each other from the across the world through a popular Philippine Mythology resource website called, “The Aswang Project.”
