Meet Dj Mr. Lee | Official Dj for Dru Hill /Music Producer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dj Mr. Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dj, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process to starting my own business was simple… I’m sick of being subjected to the whims of other… A good friend told me once, if you have that strong of an opinion about the teacher, maybe it’s time to not be a student anymore.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
It’s funny when I try to tell people about what I do, I tend to focus on what I’m working on at the moment but ultimately as an artist, I would have to say that there was always a connection to music and that connection evolved over the years. So I actually started out dancing and that kept evolving because I kept trying to outdo myself… So I started in my living room… just so I can actually go out and not make a fool out of myself lol…. and then I started going to block parties, then I started breakdancing in Times Square, then I started taking classes and working with choreographers & starting doing shows. I was really fortunate as a dancer to work with some amazing people including Wyclef, Beyoncé, Ashanti, Tyra Banks, Musiq Soulchild just to name a few. As I started to grow out of that I wanted to find a new way to connect with music and that was when I got in a DJ and it was a lot of fun and it was great because I actually found out I had an actual talent for it and was able to advance fairly quickly. And the funniest part is I found out it might’ve been in my genetics because my DJ name actually comes from my grandfather… When I told my mother I wanted to DJ she said to me “your grandfather used to DJ” I NEVER knew this my entire life! She showed me an invitation to one of my first birthdays, and the invitation said “music by Mr Lee” I knew right then and there that was going to be the name that I ran with for the rest of my music career.
And from DJing came producing… I really pride myself on my music selection, just picking songs that make people FEEL things, and make people want to move, my dancing background definitely heavily influence my DJ style! I want to always keep people dancing and from there I took that same energy and put that into creating music that I wanted to play to make people dance lol.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had a friend come into town, I actually would probably only go to one place because I’m kind of a homebody LOL… I love good food, and I love good music in a place that I can get both is a Raw Mondays at Delicious Pizzas… I’m a New Yorker so I’m serious about my pizza! Lol, so the fact that my favorite place to go hear DJs play, also has really good pizza… I couldn’t ask for a better place to go!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
BIG shout out to the whole Dragon Fam!!! Sisqo, Nokio, Black, Smoke, their Manger Kevin Peck, and the dancers Teach, Juice, Danni, “GP”… I have worked with them longer than I have worked with ANYONE!
