We had the good fortune of connecting with DJ Sammii Blendz and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DJ Sammii, how do you think about risk?
I’m a huge believer in ” With no risks there’s no story” . In everything we decide to do in life it’s all the risks we take in which creates the grand story of your journey . Whether it be risk taking to join that college your not to sure about , jumping into a job you have no experience with , trying to trust your intuition. Down to branching off as an entrepreneur and taking the steps into believing in what you do before you can convince anyone else . It all starts with risks.
I started my career as a very young entrepreneur like most teenagers my age it was nothing but a dream I had no idea how to make a reality. I was 15 years old and found my place in the world as a striving DJ. Like most people my age at it’s time people just took what I was doing as nothing more then just a passing stage in my life. I refused to let that be the reality because of the feeling and energy I felt every single time I performed as a young artists. I was still in high school at the time and I was permitted by my grandmother to work as long as I was able to keep up with school . I was literally picking up gigs all around New York City as often as I possibly could a lot of those nights were school nights. I didn’t have a care in the world I was taking Gigs from basement partys to baby showers , weddings , kids parties, underground clubs to even local bars that could barley fit a speaker in them to work and get my name out. I was in my sophomore year in high school and I had made a decision that would continue to play in my life till the present day and that was “ Seize all opportunities by any means and don’t think about what can go wrong and just keep going ! “ no matter what.
The craziest risk I took was believing in my dream as hard as I did and canceling out all other options to chase what ultimately would be my career in the present day as an adult.
Risks are the faith I put into every step I take within the industry I work . So it’s the most important piece , having a clear understanding of what ever moves you make as an entrepreneur there will always be repercussions sometimes good sometimes bad. With that comes the key question you sit and ask yourself before making any move , ” What are the risks? ” and will you be brave to face them head on . In my opinion that’s what makes a successful entrepreneur.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One thing I can start off with saying it’s been one crazy journey till this point. Nothing about the hurtles and bridges I’ve had to and still have to construct for my brand and business have been easy. Giving you guys some background of where I’m from I was born and raised in The Bronx for those who are not familiar with the area that’s in New York City , what most consider the city of dreams. I grew up in the inner boroughs which is nothing like the shiny lights and glamorous living everyone knows New York for being. It’s a very rough place where I’m from like most who’ve pushed to fight out of poverty I’ve always had to work 3 times as hard , especially being a young His panic women that is openly gay. I was already set back early on not only having to deal with regular day in and day out ignorance , My industry at its time didn’t have to much of a place for me in corporate America yet . So the odds were slim to nothing for someone like me being able to reach the peaks I have in my career.
What honestly gave me my drive was growing up in the environment I did. When you’re growing up around the reality of what hardship really is , it gives you a purer look at your options and oddly for those who want more a clearer sight. I found what I love to do in the center of all havoc as a teenager and that was my love for Djing. It really sunk into me the second I got an opportunity to try it. Surprisingly I was extremely good at it from day one. My major rule is ” Keep going forward ” no matter the amount of kick backs you endure. It’s paid off tremendously.
Over the years I’ve learned countless lessons. One of the major lessons I’ve learned is ” keep an open mind and a very military mindset when it comes to educating yourself ” . By that what I mean is allow your vision to steer you however understand no one can see what you do, no matter how well people get to know you they will only ever see the final product. Understand you can reach higher peaks if you allow another great mind to give you some constructive criticism. Don’t take anything personal running a business boils down to one thing ” What is the solution ?” at all times especially you being the leader. Most importantly never stop learning ! no matter how good you are you still need 2 forms of education to survive in my opinion ” Book smarts & what we consider ( street smarts ) ” I like to think of ” street smarts” more of hands on learning outside of the classroom not necessarily the “streets” in all cases. A lot of entrepreneurs went off on there own at a young age and educated themselves in their field , however weather it’s on your own or in a classroom you need to make yourself fully aware of how corporate business works if you truly want to be successful.
I’ve gotten this far by staying focused , learning before making impulsive decisions , believing in what I do and most importantly remaining open minded with my evolving industry. Being a Dj is being an influence on those who need motivation. We create ambiance’s for people to take a mental vacation from there day to day reality. The most important factor of my brand ” DJ Sammii Blendz ” is to always play for the people , everything starts with belief if you don’t believe in what you do how can you convince anyone else to. Dj Sammii Blendz is a universal name which attaches people of all backgrounds together. What I can leave you with is the only way to experience it is to come check out a show live.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I visit Los Angeles pretty often however I’m still learning the areas. I would say if you’re looking for a fun time out you definitely have to check out West Hollywood , Beverly Hills has some great restaurants . One of my favorite places I would say is Delilah’s every time I’m in town I make sure to book a table .
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I Would like to dedicate this shout out to a bundle of people. I’ve worked and am currently working with an abundance of great hard working brands and people. In all we do , we are only as good as the company we keep and most importantly the company we decide to work with ! With growth in any industry it consists of us helping each other out on the paths we cross. Thank you Baramee Films , Gruvy Hospitality, Rafael Pacheco Security services ,Ten Visions, Geri Torres photography, Creators create . co , the Dj’s I’ve crossed paths with throughout my career, and of course my team in which work extremely hard at my company TheBLNDZEFX . In my now 15 years of being in the business I’ve come across some amazing people and brands , In which has elevated me beyond. It helped me find myself as a creative and entrepreneur. For anyone reading this , the key factor here is the company you decide to keep around that’s what will determine your success. I’ve gone through many rollercoasters , bumps falls, failures , indecisive moments , and moments where I just wanted to give up . It’s my drive and love for what I do that has kept me grounded . I read a book in which helped me enhance my entire thought process as a whole it was ” Napoleon hills Outwitting the devil ” . I feel every entrepreneur needs to take a look into that book , only the open minded will perceive the message correctly.
