We had the good fortune of connecting with Domino Mack and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Domino, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I lived in LA for two years moved DTLA and found myself in the flower district way too much; floral design became apart of my weekend therapy activities. My roommate at the time Mark Wrice, photographer started taking shots of my work and soon folks started to inquire. I soon was making floral designs for people I knew in the music industry and just the feed back I was getting was way too good; so I started doing market research and then found myself really understanding the character of floral, colors, shapes and textures. I then came back to my home town Philly, and started @dnafloral with my mother who does the visual art side of DNA. Philly floral market was wide open for what I’m creating and its been going well. We are humbled and blessed.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am an artist first so I’m very sensitive about my shit lol; I think the small details really set me apart from other floral designers, also coming from a floral community such as DTLA flower district, and being able to really merge styles to creative my own really helps. Of course I’m inspired from all avenues of visual art; but floral allows me to speech and creative in a language that I am mostly fluent in. I love it here!!! I am still very much learning everyday however I do see progress; I just figured out my style and mastering that could be difficult but I think what’s essential is being consistent in your art; and understanding everyone isn’t going to get it. Building a brand isn’t easy but its not hard you just need to really stay consistent and work on something everyday to perfect your business. DNA FLORAL is gender neutral and has no rules. WE JUST CREATIVE BEAUTIFUL SHIT! each piece is different and has its own DNA that why its so special.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Uhmmm- if we’re in Philly during the summer – def have to get them a water ice from ‘Fred’ in southwest then would have to
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mother is def the inspiration behind the brand; my focus is mainly in floral design, so I’ve gained lots of knowledge from Mayesh Youtube channel, Pure Designs in Philly and Snapdragron Florist in Philly. I am a self taught floral designer but I have to say those resources have helped a lot. When I first got back to Philly I was doing lots of market research just to see who and what was out there and just getting introduced to the floral community. The support and feedback from my fellow florist has been amazing and very much encouraging for me to continue.
