We had the good fortune of connecting with Donata Greco and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Donata, why did you pursue a creative career?
It feels like I could not have a different life than this one. The first moment my father took the keyboard to play some music I knew I wanted to be a musician. So here I am!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Being a woman musician in Italy is a never ending challenge. I realized it really late in my life and now I can’t help seeing how overwhelming it is, but I don’t really care. I decided to be a musician so I keep going, just as I did at school when I was a kid. In fact, I’d say, something that sets me apart from others is that I always stick to my ideas and never listen to other people’s opinions, unless I really care for them. Maybe this prevented me to give up when I was younger and now I know what is right for me, even if it brings me to difficult decisions. Now I am a full time freelance musician, I manage to work online and offline as a producer and a live musician, and I always stayed true to myself even if I sometimes feel alone, but in the end I always do what I love and sometimes I can help people too, doing what they love as a teacher or a friend. I have a YouTube channel that I use to share my experience and some music theory, which is, I think, really beautiful and not all the people were so lucky to study music, at least in my Country. So I try to make it simple, because it’s fun to me and to other people.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
In Naples you can find a lot of buskers, musicians in the streets, I am one of them too! So if you get lost you will have a great experience anyway, also because you will eat well anywhere if you like pizza and street food! If you allow me, I’d love to show you the castles, the museums and the seaside of course. Actually we have many: there’s the Naples sea walk, but you can go to Sorrento, Amalfi or the islands (Capri, Ischia, Procida). If you like camping by summer you would love Bacoli. But you can also find parties on the boats. One thing is for sure: people here love to help, to host you and to show you places, even if maybe they don’t speak english, they will find a way to be understood.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Well, I’d say.. So many people in my life! I started music since I was a little kid so big thanks to my family who had the patience to hear me make some terrible noise before I started sounding decent! Then, my music friends who had huge impact in my decision to go on pursuing a career in music. First off, my best friend Martina who is a great pianist and singer, we studied together in Naples’ conservatory and then we had different paths, but with the same heart, so anytime I have some doubt, I reach out to her and she helps me thinking about any decision. Then, there’s Gabriele, who I met recently. He helped me mixing and mastering my first solo album and we became great friends, because we share the same ideas and we strongly believe in a musical life, which is a real challenge. We are working on a new project together. Then, there’s Mike MAD Smooth, we met on the web and we are collaborating through these hard times, we became friends during the pandemic and I just absolutely love to work with this guy, he has endless ideas and he’s always cheerful no matter what! Can’t wait to go to Florida to meet him
