We had the good fortune of connecting with DONNA SCOATES-NIXON and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi DONNA, what is the most important factor behind your success?
I have had people in the past that wanted to jump on my bandwagon and partner with me and then… CRICKETS! I found myself waiting for them to move MY business forward, because I wasn’t confident I could do it by myself.
But…when I finally got fed up and stopped waiting for “permission” from others…partners or agents…to get things done, I had a breakthrough “AHA” moment and realized I didnt need anyone’s Permission…(see what I did there) to get my work out there myself! I got out of my comfort zone, believed in my abilities and have been unstoppable ever since….and I’m just getting started!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am an author and am proud of the fact that I can say that. There is a huge difference between saying you’ll write a book “someday”… to sitting down today, getting it done and being able to see it on the shelf of a Barnes and Noble or Indie bookstore.
I think the only thing that sets me apart from others is taking that “someday” and making it happen today. It’s so easy to get stuck in life…caught up in the adulting we have to do that puts our own wants and needs on hold, or to doubt ourselves and abilities, let our accumulated baggage weigh us down, or to get so overwhelmed at what we want to do in life that we get stuck in analysis paralysis and stay…stuck.
I overcame my challenges, by getting out of my own way and learning to stop waiting for others. I took the time for me…time to decide what I wanted and then made a plan to go get it with me, myself and I!
My brand is all about reminding you that…you don’t need anyone’s permission to “do you” and live your best life. We only get this one precious life so get unstuck and make life happen! In my book and online courses I teach you the lessons I’ve learned along the way and some success principles I’ve been teaching for over 25 years now, while also going through some real talk to help you unload some of that baggage weighing you down.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’m from Newport Beach so…hellllo… I could show anyone the best time ever there. But I currently live in the Bay area so let me show you around up here.
We would of course go into the Wine Country. First in Napa…Yountville specifically because that’s my jam. I’m there once a week hanging at my favorite R&D or Brix for a weekend brunch. Do some wine tasting there of course, head into St. Helena for a little shopping and then drive on over to Sonoma for a different vibe, My favorite tasting there is Three Fat Guys winery which is owned by three former linemen from the Green Bay Packers. Fun place to hang AND great wine, especially their Cab. Oh…and there’s a new ziplining experience in Sonoma I just heard about so we’d have to go there!
Another day I’d put you on the back of my BMW1250GS Motorcycle and we would ride along highway 1 to Big Sur for the most amazing meal and views at Nepenthe’. I’m ready to go now just talking about it.
One day to go hug a tree in Muir Woods and another to go kayaking in Bodega Bay …need I say more? The other days we would go play tourist together in the city by the bay…San Francisco. Walking the Embarcadero and taking the ferry to Alcatraz, going down Lombard street, a day at the beach, taking in all the amazing art museums, and for sure playing in Chrissy field watching all the windsurfers and water foil surfers…I would of course want to join in on that water fun.
Any of those days in the city, we would have trouble trying to decide where to go eat, because the choices are crazy good. One thing I know for sure…Food porn pics would be happening.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have a few people…First of all my family…because I was reared in a home where I never felt I needed to ask permission to “do me,” I was always encouraged to explore my interests and talents, and to go after whatever I wanted in life. The older I get, the more I realize what a gift that was.
Secondly, my late husband…my love, a successful business man, motivational speaker and author. He encouraged my writing and became my business mentor… teaching me all that I draw upon now to run my two businesses dedicated to guiding others to their best life!
Last but definitely not least, my Life Coach… Donna Quarles of itstimetosoar.com. She is the one who encouraged me to stop waiting for others to run my business for me, and to stop “talking” about the book I wanted to write…and held me accountable to getting it done. She is my cheerleader as well as the one who gives me a kick in the butt when I need to stop “talking” about it and start “be”ing about it!
