Meet Donna Sheratan | Artist/Author

We had the good fortune of connecting with Donna Sheratan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Donna, why did you pursue a creative career?
My destiny was set at age four while visiting The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. This painting of Goya s reached out to me inspiring me to become an artist. The portrait has never left my
mind since I first set eyes on it. I pictured it so vividly, a fascinated four year old stood at the base of the
stairs holding her grandmothers hand while looking up at the gigantic building.
Wandering through the room s of paintings, our foot steps slapped against the wooden floors,
sending out reverberating echoes that rang out and broke into the silence. Abruptly, my steps came to a
halt as I was drawn into a painting of a little boy dressed in an extravagant red romper holding a string
attached to a birds leg. In the shadows the trio of cats stare attentively at the pet bird. Absorbed in
contemplation, I stood frozen starring at the image. Suddenly, this voice of great power an knowledge
stated, “You will become an artist, and you will be as well known as Picasso.” I was compelled to obey
the voice. In that moment, I believed that I would become an artist and that it was my gift from God. The
voice gave me my lives purpose.
That day at the Museum, the experience was so profound that it gave me the strength to endure an
never give up on my Art.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Sacrifices often come with pursing a full/time career as a professional artist. I believe all-in is the only way to go. An artist must take a chance on themselves and their talent. I have been painting, for
many, many years and there was no social media, artist had to have a gallery to sell their work, which at
the time I didn’t have. In the beginning I was so shy , but if I didn’t sell I couldn’t eat, it forced me out of
my comfort zone. I learned to live on very little. Literally a starving artist, going to bed hungry only to
awake to an empty refrigerator. Its not a matter of sales, my visions inspire me to continue creating even
if no one was buying my art. Create the art you love and find buyers who agree with your vision. It takes
time to build up the talent, skills, and body of work that demands attention.
Being an artist has caused me untold suffering and has bought me the most happiness in my life.
When I saw myself on the cover of People magazine. My painting of the Angel Faith was on my
shoulder. Finally, I could tell the world Angel really do exist. There is no scientific evidence to support
their existence, however I have seen them with my own eyes.
Painting in the past of Angels- Raphael, Michelangelo, an other artists created works that were
based on stories from the bible. I began painting Angels after my NDE, near death experience. I had a
close brush with death due to years of chronic debilitating kidney problems. Life after death definitely
exists. I witnessed an intense light, like no light I had ever seen. I was totally immersed in the peaceful
light, becoming pain-free. I have vivid recall of my NDE, an the memory never fades, no matter how
much time passes. After I crossed over, I was greeted by a band of Angels of light, brilliant beams
emanated from them. Awestruck ,until they communicated with me. They told me, You must go back and
finish your work. Your mission will become clear to you over time.
Two years later, while working on a commission for a client in Beverly Hills, as I dipped the
paintbrush into the paint, preparing to put the next brush stroke against the canvas, an Angel appeared
between the painting and me. Startled, the paintbrush fell out of my hand and on to the floor . I watched
the Angel float in mid air, light emanating from it, its size was that of a small child. Quickly, I reached
down to pick up my paint brush, but by the time I glanced up, the Angel vanished. What did it want? I
began obsessing over it. Since the Angels came into my life, I had experienced a lot of challenges. For
one, my divorce had turned my life upside down. Hope the Angel doesn’t return! I decided to paint it
thinking that if I did, maybe it would leave me alone. If I told any one that Angels are appearing before
my eyes they would think I was crazy!
Living with the Angels for 30 years now, I have accepted them in my life and take their guidance.
Thanks to the Angels message, I sold a painting while visiting Monaco . Everything comes back to the
one night it was raining. The rain pelted the umbrella as I walked down the streets, when my shoes started
getting wet, I took out my cell phone to call my client to ask her to meet somewhere closer. The Angels
interrupted, before I could even dial the phone number. Their message was clear for me not to change my
plans for the evening. I snapped my phone closed an reluctantly carried on walking in the pouring rain.
As the evening would unfold Kate the owner of the restaurant Stars `N` Bars, would be buying a
painting. Fast forward in time, Kate became a real patron of my art, and connected me with an Art
Gallery that upholds a distinguished reputation in the art world.
Monday morning at the Fine Art Gallery in Monaco, I rang the gold buzzer an waited to hear the
loud click before I pushed the glass door open. The walls were lined with ornately framed oil paintings,
one glance at these gold boarders shows the value of the Old Masters encased with in. After all this time
and struggle I had arrived. Alone in silence with the great works of art, I gazed up at my painting, Juin
questing, can anything beat this feeling, this was the closest I came to hanging in a museum. Being a
perfectionist I could relate to the grand ambitions of their work, what a technique these artist had. I was
self -taught artist, my time living in Italy visiting museums to hone my skills was an investment that had
paid off
Life’s most important lesson. Never ever give up. A famous Hollywood director sitting on my sofa
in my Malibu home once told me. “The only difference between the one who make it is he doesn’t give
up. Most people quit at a certain point, they stop. The ones who become famous, they just kept going.”
.
It was by no means easy being a full -time Artist. There were times when I wished the planet
would just stop spinning so I could get off! Don’t get caught up in the daily drama. There is a story from
my up coming book, Wings of Success, were I was the Queen of Drama.
Monaco, in the dark storage room of her lawyer,s luxury apartment building Donna heard foot
steps approaching. Quickly, she pulled on her dress.
“Can I help you miss?”, the security guard, suspiciously looks at her open suit cases lying in the
hallway.
“No, just getting something out of the storage.”she answered, with a snobby attitude.
“Its just that on the security cameras we didn’t see you get into the elevator.”
When he leaves, she slipped on her underwear. She was surrounded by wooden crates of Dom
Perignon, Pinot Noir, Bordeaux. When spotting her black suitcase with her clothes spilling out , that
unnerved her. It was a dark reminder that she doesn’t have a place to stay. Getting dressed in a storage,
or cave that’s what the french call it. It felt more like a cave, dark, with cement walls, an a useless light
bulb dangled from the ceiling like a suicide.
Even though her life was beginning to feel more like a nightmare instead of a dream holiday. She
resisted the urge to fly back to America. Her client Kate the owner of a hugely popular restaurant in
Monaco, told her that her ass would be back on a plane. When Jude Law came into Kate’s restaurant, she
said sorry I don’t know who you are, I don’t have time to go to the movies. Kate being an Angel, found the
time an made the introduction to a prestigious gallery. Once she does the installation, of her Angel
painting, all this will be behind her.
On her way out of the building, she said au revoir to the concierge. They must think she was
crazy, going in wearing one dress and come out wearing another. Her lawyer was away for a month
skiing in Switzerland, he lives here that was his problem. Unfortunately for her, he forgot to leave a spare
key for the apartment with the doorman. As he held the door open for her he asked, are you the daughter
of the Sheraton Hotel? She just smiled an exited.
Regardless of what challenges you are facing, you have to keep moving forward. You have the
power within to make your dreams come true. Just because something didn’t go as planned doesn’t mean
it didn’t go well. Sometimes, the unexpected can be a blessing in disguise.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I do go out, you would find me at a Hotel, its strange, some how I always feel at home there. I guess its because I have spent a lot of my life living at them. My morning routine would be a cappuccino at
Shutters on the beach. Its like a mini-break for me, I can relax on the wooden deck and soak up sun . Then
I head to Malibu Beach to do my meditation.
For lunch, The Beverly Hills Hotel-known as the Pink Palace. Having crab cakes or Caesar Salad at the
iconic polo lounge patio amongst the palm tress an banana leaves.
I love swans, I often paint them. So where else but ,The Hotel Bel-Air, A stillness, calm you are
surrounded by greenery, the lake the visions of the swans gliding.
Loews hotel Spa in Santa Monica for a Wellness break.
If I want a buzzing vibe. The Mondrian, the stylish Sunset Strip hotel on the rooftop pool sipping
cocktails, people watching with a fantastic view of the LA skyline. Painting all day can be solitary.
The Getty Museum for its architecture an of course the Art.
