We had the good fortune of connecting with Dorothy Milone and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dorothy, have you ever found yourself in a spot where you had to decide whether to give up or keep going? How did you make the choice?
Always remember why you started in the first place.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets us apart from other artists is that we truly want to express what it means to be a woman. You see a group of faces but together we make up one force, that’s Dorothy Milone. Society always tries to categorize people and label them as a single thing. Some people may be singular like that, but women are often complex. A woman can be the best mother on the planet, but at the same time she could be a congresswoman, a gymnast and chef. We as Dorothy Milone want to show people that we are more than just a singing group. Young girls look to entertainers as role models, and rather than just appeal to them so they buy tickets to our shows we would like to instill a positive message in them. A few members of the Dorothy Milone group has changed over time but this just goes to show that Dorothy Milone needed to mature the same way any woman does. Some group members left because they felt the calling of a solo opportunity while others may have gotten bogged down with motherhood. Both are experiences that can happen in any woman’s life and rather than shame them we embrace them. We support the futures of all past members of Dorothy Milone, but the obstacles and setbacks the group faced ultimately molded it into an even stronger unit. Dorothy Milone’s story is no different than that of any woman who has been knocked down a couple times but always made sure to get back up with just a tad more toughness.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If our best friend was visiting the area then we would definitely have to take them to Mama Shelter and The Highlight Room. Both of these locations offer a great ambience as well as good food. We feel as though people who frequent rooftop bars such as these are free-spirited and are always looking for a good time. That’s the exact same mindset that we have outside of the studio, and we would need our best friend to be on board as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to give a special shoutout to Oprah Winfrey and her book The Path Made Clear. We have experienced a lot of hurdles as women in the music industry with people trying to brand us a certain way or discourage us from continuing our career as a singing group. Oprah’s book served as a great source of inspiration for us as it motivated us to continue doing what we feel we are destined to do without being overwhelmed by the words of internet trolls and typical haters.
