We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Denise Mcdermott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Denise, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Authentic Intentionality is the most important factor in my mission to help change the way we think, talk and act about mental health.

When we are leading with the heart with awareness and self love we are able to help others in ways we could not imagine!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I will never forget my experience when I was a third year in medical school on my pediatric rotation when I interviewed a teen suffering from stomach pain confiding her experience with unrelenting bullying. The attending doctor was surprised when I walked out of the room to report that she had just tried to kill herself that morning. Her family thanked me for creating a safe space for her to confide her deepest fears and difficulty transitioning to the United States from Africa. After unloading many of the pressures and feeling of despair she no longer wanted to commit suicide and even shared she was inspired to thrive academically and way goodbye to her tough high shool years.

This was one of my many “AHA moments” of compassionately asking the right questions guided by my intuition to help others through emotionally rough times during my medical school rotations that made me realize I wanted to pursue psychiatry. Looking back to the mid 1990’s there was a lot criticism by my peers when they found out I was pursuing this path as there was an absolute stigma and shame around mental health. I followed my heart and my inner voice and did my adult psychiatry residency at Emory University and child psychiatry fellowship at UCLA.

Fast forward to 2024, now thirty years later after 50,000 hours of patient care as an adult and child psychiatrist treating all age groups I remain inspired to lead with the heart to help others holistically thrive mind, body and soul.

I would say what sets me apart from other doctors is my innate intuition, creativity and out of the box “less is more or no medication” approach. I practice multidimensional medicine focusing on wellness, not illness.

I represented the United States in 2018 at the Dalai Lama’s Tibetan medical society as guest lecturer in India on “Nurturing Children’s Mental Health” which was next level eye opening to share and receive wisdom from so many luminaries.

I also share my clinical expertise and wellness approach in my podcast The Dr. Denise Show (almost 500 episodes) interviewing paradigm progression pioneers from all walks of life (doctors, athletes, spiritual leaders, influencers) who are kindred spirit mental health warriors.
The Dr. Denise Show is a global finalist in the People’s Podcast Choice Awards 2022, 2023, & 2024 in the science and medicine category!

A unique intention that I have is that the titles of the show, the hashtags, and the tips within are easy-to-remember healing phrases that are a shot of positive psychology to model cognitive reframing and to remind us about the powerful energy that our words, thoughts and actions have in influencing our overall health and well-being. These universal truths are integrated into my book, show, talks, jewelry and now in a song just released 9/11/24, “Dr. Denise Soul Signature.”

A challenge along the way in 2017 was that my social media was targeted and I experienced a fraud in the hundreds of thousands of dollars as well as threats. I took a short pause in recording content to focus on legal pursuits and to heal/alchemize the betrayal into greater inspiration. I am a devoted mother and need to continuously put intentional loving energy into my son and my private practice. I won the civil law suit, and helped several others to not be defrauded. The collections process is unfortunately in favor of the bad guys.

This experience has taught me to build trust by giving small tasks and expecting follow through and strong work ethic. I tend to see the best in others even when they are dropping the ball. Back ground checks are also a definite tool in the tool box to do your due diligence.

Healthy Habits: I swim in the pool 7-9 hours a week as a moving meditation, healing & prayerful place and for health in general.

Tip: Find you healthy fitness/ meditation activity that honors your unique neurostyle and fits into your busy day.

The strongest lesson I can share with all of you here is to lead with your heart and stay in integrity, aka “ININ.”

I love being a mom, my son is my biggest teacher of this lifetime.

Thank. you to all past, present & future guests, readers, mentors and loved ones!

xx

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
A week in LA with a dear friend would include outdoor play sessions in the convertible rocking out to tunes starting in my town Manhattan Beach.

A day of shopping downtown, walking on the strand and a stop at Esperanza for a light bite could launch the adventure.

A chill day by the pool relaxing, chatting and vision boarding would be day 2. After all rest days allow balance and emotional refueling.

Day 3 we would head to Malibu for a delightful visit to Olandar, the Hieroglyph of the Soul. It would be a mind opening tour with visionary Leigh McCloskey narrating his spiritual art transmissions that are multi dimensional and birthed 9/11/2001.

Day 4 would include live music somewhere, somehow. Quite easy to do in LA with eclectic neighborhoods and a plethora of choices.

Day 5 Most probably another nature chill day. A hike, lounging at the pool.

Day 6 A drive along the Palos Verdes Peninsula for a scenic ocean view with destination Terranea for a mid afternoon tapa or early evening dining at Nelson’s. During the summer there is outside live music. The lobby area also has surprise local music talent,

Day 7 Would be a trip to Pacific Palisades to visit a dear friend that would surprise us with lunch and time in nature at her lovely property. We might even sneak for some fashion finds in the quaint town.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Thank you G. Beverly Bergmann, Emily Eddins, Barb Cech

Thank you Bev for being my telepathic muse and soul sister.

Emily, I never imagined the level of creativity & inspiration that would be experienced while collaborating.

Mom (Barbara) you are my rock, confidant and gatekeeper.

Thank you ALL.
