We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kelli Uitenham and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Kelli, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind the success of my brand is my passion for what I do and my dedication to each of my patients. As a medical speech language pathologist, the majority of my patients meet me during some form of life crisis. They may have suffered a stroke, a traumatic brain injury, their dementia or Parkinson’s Disease could have progressed, or something equally devastating. Each situation can be scary and if they are seeking my services then life as they knew it has likely changed. I respect the sensitivity of each situation and communicate my dedication to providing functional therapy with the goal of improving my patient’s overall quality of life. My work is truly my passion and I love it! And it makes me happy when patients or their family members respond with “it really shows.”

What should our readers know about your business?
Serenity Speech Therapy is a private telepractice licensed to practice in nine different states, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Virginia, California, Indiana, Ohio, and Massachusetts. We cater to the adult and geriatric populations, specializing in dementia, Parkinson’s Disease, stroke rehabilitation, dysphagia or swallowing disorders. Non medical services target professional speech needs including accent modification, articulation, and public speaking.

The establishment of Serenity Speech Therapy has been an exciting journey and it makes me proud to know that I am helping my patients and their families. Being the owner of a private practice is not easy but it is incredibly rewarding. I have learned invaluable lessons throughout this process. One of them being, it is important to share your knowledge with others. Fellow speech language pathologists (SLPs) often ask me questions about how I started my practice, how to get into telepractice, how to get multiple state licenses, or pursue a doctorate. After answering the same questions over and over, I decided to launch Kensington Academy, LLC.

Kensington Academy is a space for speech language pathologists (SLPs) to receive mentorship and coaching from yours truly. SLPs get one on one sessions with me designed to navigate their journey to private practice and more. The mission of Kensington Academy is to save SLPs time, money, and frustration, so they can be more successful faster.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love exposing visitors to restaurants unique to Charlotte! My go to places for lunch are Fenwick’s, Mr. Charles Chicken, and Hot Taco. Followed by something sweet at Nadine’s Funnel Cakes, yum! Dinner outings must include a roof top location to enjoy Charlotte’s beautiful weather and snap some great pics. My go-to elevation location is Merchant and Trade on South Church Street. After dinner we can sip cocktails at 1501 South Mint or STATS.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
The first person that always comes to mind for a professional shoutout is the mentor and friend who introduced me to the field of speech language pathology, Vonda Criswell. I am so grateful for her guidance over the years. And especially for the confidence she instilled in me. Vonda has supported each endeavor and has always been there to answer questions, point me in the right direction, or be a shoulder to lean on. It was Vonda who encouraged me to stop waiting, and to open my private practice. I am incredibly grateful for her mentorship, but most importantly for her friendship.

Overall, I’d attribute my success to God, my family, and friends. Their love and support have made each step of my journey doable and more enjoyable.
