Meet Dr. Kiki Steiner | Decolonizing Education Coach & Consultant

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kiki Steiner and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Kiki, what inspires you?
Today, I am inspired by the presence of my adoptive, biological, and chosen ancestors in my life. Through my decolonization journey, I have deepened my relationship with my ancestors, which has strengthened my relationship with my Self. And that’s why I feel called to help guide others in their decolonization journeys, in order for us to collectively dream, envision, and manifest liberation for the next generations.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
These days I am most proud of my relationship with my Self, but it wasn’t always this way. There was a time when my inner critic would keep me playing small in my life and shaming myself to be “perfect.” As a transracial adoptee, my ethnic identity was unclear, until I took a DNA test, which made being one of the only BIPOC kids in my hometown growing up especially confusing. Additionally, being an adoptee, I took on an internal narrative that told me I was never good enough. So, I became a straight-A student and a people-pleaser, and gradually, I stopped speaking my truth. In the last 10 years of studying the human voice in my choral music studies, I have learned how critical it is to have a relationship with our voices and our breath. And that’s why I feel called to help guide others in their decolonization journeys, so that they can release shame around their voice, connect with their ancestors/ancestral medicine in community, and become more grounded within themselves.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my mothers who have shown me how expansive love can be.
