We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Kimberly Lee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Kimberly, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
When I finished my residency and fellowship training, I knew I wanted to have autonomy and flexibility. I wanted to be able to spend time with my patients without being dictated to see a patient every 15 minutes. I knew that at some point I wanted to have kids, so I also wanted to make sure my schedule could be flexible to accommodate their needs as well. I didn’t know, at the time, how ambitious this was because starting your own practice entails so many different aspects. I’m fortunate to have a great team in my office, but even now, I’m constantly working when I’m out of the office to make sure everyone is tucked in.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I’ve built a practice that’s setup how I would want to be treated if I were a patient. We strive to provide the highest quality of care for our patients instead of a cookie-cutter 15 minutes per patient type of visit. My patients are like my extended family in that I like to build relationships with them. Over time, through word of mouth, my practice has grown organically. It wasn’t easy in the beginning, but I think being genuine and transparent resonates well with patients. Even though I’m the specialist in facial plastic surgery, it’s not uncommon for my patients to reach out asking about other medical issues that I’ve helped steer in the right direction. The hardest thing is making sure I stay on schedule (my staff is particularly good about that)!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Depending on whether she wanted to see the touristy attractions, I feel like Los Angeles has a lot to offer and even a week long trip isn’t enough to experience it! One of my favorite places is the beach in Malibu, followed by a visit to the hot springs or a body scrub. I love going to eat at Bottega Louie, and there is a plethora of fabulous sushi and Italian restaurants. The Hollywood Bowl is a must–to enjoy the LA Phil under the stars! For a moment to unwind and relax, there are a lot of secret areas that have amazing views of the city.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
This question reminds me of my college admissions essay. I think all of us need a little bit of help to become better people and to find success. I’ve been blessed by having so many phenomenal mentors and support. My parents have been incredibly supportive of me and my endeavors and I certainly couldn’t have had the success I have today without their love and encouragement. I’ve had mentors at the college, medical school, residency and fellowship level who always challenged me to think outside of the box. Lastly, I’m fortunate to have a camaraderie of colleagues and friends who are supportive and always lend a shoulder to bounce ideas off of. I’m so blessed in that way!
