We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Lisette Sanchez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Lisette, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Perseverance, grit and self-compassion are the three most important factors behind my success. People often speak about the hard work, persistence, and courage it takes to be successful. Today, I want to share with you why self-compassion is also an integral part of my success. My ability to be kind to myself when I experience a challenge helps me reframe and consider different approaches to a challenge rather than focusing on what “I did wrong” or “should have done differently.” For example, instead of thinking “this project is too much for me, why did I do this to myself?” I will think, “This project is larger than I anticipated, how can I make it more manageable?” When I have self-compassion, I am able to reflect and gain more clarity around the next best steps towards success.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Let me start with sharing a little bit more about what I do. I am the founder of Calathea Wellness Coaching & Psychological Services, inc. I am a bilingual and bicultural licensed psychologist, coach and speaker. People often ask me what the name of my business means. Calathea symbolizes new beginnings, to turn over a new leaf. My goal is to empower people to be the best versions of themselves.

In my clinical work, my specialties are: workplace mental health, founder/entrepreneur related-stress and social anxiety. My approach to therapy is informed by a collaborative, directive, multicultural, strength-based, and social justice lens. I integrate various evidence-based and holistic treatment methods and interventions. This means that I consider each individual’s concern within the context of that individual. I recognize that we all do not live in a bubble and our actions are often in response to our environments. In my coaching work, I specialize in leadership coaching for entrepreneurs, founders, and/or creators. My role is to support my clients in elevating their leader skillset, refining their vision for success for themselves and their organization. Overall, I provide a confidential space for reflection, insight building and exploration.

Now that you know a little bit more about my work, I want to share a little bit about my journey. I am a first generation scholar and professional raised by hard working class immigrants in the San Fernando Valley. My experience as the eldest daughter and first-gen scholar has been instrumental in the development of my skills for success.

My experience of “being first” has informed my approach to professional and personal challenges. Being first, has meant learning to be a trailblazer and challenging naysayers. Not everyone is going to believe in you or your dream, what matters most is that you believe in yourself! Being first, has also meant becoming comfortable with learning to navigate new and unfamiliar spaces. It has helped me become more resourceful and creative when it comes to problem solving and navigating difficult situations. Finally, being first, has meant taught me the true value of “learning from your mistakes and taking risks.” Sometimes, the only way to learn has been “to do,” and “correct” as needed.

As I mentioned before, I attribute my success to my perseverance, grit and self compassion. However, what sets me apart is an integration of those characteristics with my core values of community building, empowerment, and authenticity. I will say it again, my goal is to empower you to be the best version of yourself. I do this because when you are the best version of yourself, you feel more empowered, you are more connected with your authentic self, and, as a result, you are a better community member.

If any of this resonates with you, we may be a good fit and I would love to work with you!

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Ok I am not going to give away too many secrets but I will share a few of my favorite LA foods/ activities:

Food: Tacos El Venado in North Hollywood, Mole at La Guelaguetza, Pupusas from VCHOS Food truck, Ramen from Killer Noodle, and yummy ice cream and treats from your local Michoacana Ice Cream shop.

Activities: Dodger Game, LACMA, Renting a bike at the beach, hiking the Claremont Loop

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I am eternally grateful for the support of my community, my family, close friends and mentors. They are my main source of encouragement, love, and guidance. I especially would like to take a moment to recognize my incredible parents, Martha and Rafael. My parents are immigrants from El Salvador & Mexico. The are the hardest working people I know and have dedicated their lives to providing the best that they could for myself, my brother, and our community. They are the epitome of perseverance, grit, and compassion.
