Meet Dr. Pilar Nova

We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Pilar Nova and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Pilar, let’s start by talking about what inspires you?
You know, I’ve always been inspired by the idea that there’s so much untapped potential inside every person. I see it like this: we’re all like seeds—with the right environment, a little encouragement, and genuine care, we can grow into something truly remarkable. That’s really what drives me. My purpose is to help nurture that growth in others—especially when they’re doubting themselves or unsure of their next steps. Whether it’s through a conversation, a lesson, or just being there for someone, I try to plant little seeds of confidence and possibility. I may never see how all of them bloom, but I know they matter.
Balance is also huge for me. I always say: just like a tree needs deep roots to grow tall, we need to take care of ourselves to be strong for others. Leadership and service don’t work without self-care, mental wellness, and time for reflection. That’s not selfish—it’s essential. If I want to uplift others, I have to stay grounded myself.
At the heart of it all, my calling is to be a light—especially when people are navigating doubt, fear, or imposter syndrome. I believe hope is powerful—like, world-shifting powerful. And when someone feels lost, they don’t just need advice, they need someone to believe in them. I don’t just talk about transformation—I live it. I use my own story to show what’s possible. In everything I do, I try to create spaces where people feel truly seen, heard, and empowered. Because in the end, it’s not just about getting to the destination—it’s about growing together along the way.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Honestly, my love for being a people practitioner comes from a deeper passion: inspiring others to reach their goals. Even as a kid, I was always the one cheering others on, helping them believe in what was possible. That’s never left me. I’ve always found joy in encouraging people to grow—right where they are, no matter the starting point.
Life has its challenges, and I’ve lived through a few of my own—being a first-generation college student and returning to school as an adult learner were both defining parts of my journey. There were moments of doubt, times when I questioned if I could really juggle it all—work, school, family. But I leaned on my inner strength, stayed grounded in my “why,” and took it one step at a time. That experience taught me resilience and reminded me that growth often comes in the moments we feel the most unsure. Now, I use that journey to encourage others to keep pushing forward, even when the path feels uncertain.
That belief is really at the heart of my work now. As Director of Professional Development, I get to create learning experiences that support the growth of faculty, classified professionals, and administrators. It’s a role rooted in people—and I love that. I get to help others build confidence, discover their strengths, and step into their potential.
Outside of that, I also consult with colleges, nonprofits, and organizations—offering in-person and virtual trainings, keynotes, and workshops. My focus areas include leadership development, workplace wellness, career readiness, HR strategy, and employee engagement. As a workplace wellness strategist, I often share my own story, because I’ve found that vulnerability creates connection. When we’re willing to talk about the hard parts, we give others permission to do the same—and that’s where real growth begins.
A defining moment in my career came during the pandemic. We had to transition all our in-person trainings to virtual platforms—almost overnight. For many, it was unfamiliar territory. But instead of seeing it as a roadblock, we leaned into creativity and collaboration. Together, we found ways to make virtual learning engaging, interactive, and meaningful. That season reminded me just how important it is to lead with empathy, stay flexible, and trust in our ability to adapt. Growth really is always within reach—we just have to be open to it.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting for a week, I’d make sure they got the full LA experience—a mix of beach vibes, great food, live music, culture, adventure, and self-care. Here’s how I’d plan it out:
Day 1: Beach & Relaxation
We’d kick things off at El Matador Beach—one of my favorite spots with its breathtaking rock formations and peaceful vibe. We’d spend the afternoon soaking up the sun and enjoying the waves. For dinner, we’d head to a Malibu seafood spot with ocean views—because nothing beats fresh seafood by the water.
Day 2: Art & Culture
Breakfast at The Griddle Café is a must—their pancakes are legendary. Then, we’d head to The Getty Museum to explore stunning art, architecture, and gardens. After a day of culture and inspiration, we’d grab sunset drinks in West Hollywood, taking in the city’s vibrant energy.
Day 3: Music Under the Stars
We’d start the day exploring Venice Beach and Abbot Kinney, checking out the street performers and unique boutiques. Lunch would be at Simply Wholesome, where we’d grab a fresh veggie patty and a delicious smoothie. Then, the highlight of the night—The Hollywood Bowl. There’s nothing like listening to live music under the stars. Pure magic.
Day 4: Outdoor Adventure & Self-Care
Time to get active! We’d tackle the Culver City Stairs for an epic city view. After the workout, we’d stop by Nappily Naturals in Leimert Park to pick up some holistic herbal teas and amazing skincare products—the perfect way to nourish our bodies inside and out. Then, we’d unwind with a luxurious massage at a top spa because self-care is essential! The rest of the day would be easygoing—maybe a walk along the Santa Monica Pier, some light shopping, and just soaking in the ocean breeze.
Day 5: Exploring LA’s Hidden Gems
Brunch in Silver Lake or Echo Park would be a must, followed by a peaceful stroll around the lake. We’d check out local street art, explore creative boutiques, and enjoy the artistic energy of the city. To wrap up the trip, we’d head to a rooftop bar downtown, sipping mocktails while reflecting on an incredible week.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a big shoutout to my Care Crew—that beautiful mix of family, friends, colleagues, and mentors who’ve been with me every step of the way. These are the people who have poured into me with their love, wisdom, and encouragement, and who have helped shape my journey in ways words can’t really capture. They know who they are, and I hope they know just how much I appreciate them.
I especially want to recognize my mother and grandmother—two incredible women whose strength, love, and resilience have been the foundation of everything I am. Their example continues to guide me, and I’m endlessly grateful for the sacrifices they made so I could thrive.
Honestly, I wouldn’t be who I am without this village around me. Their belief in me fuels my purpose every single day.
