We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Raquel Hammonds and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Raquel, how do you think about risk?
Risk taking, in my opinion, is the single most important aspect of growth and career development. When you consider the stats, that of all practicing Physicians, 2% are Black Women, it is proof that the will to take a risk is what separates the dreamers from the doers. As the product of a single mother, my options were often times very limited, so at every turn I had to trust that not only was the risk worth the reward, but I also had to remember that God uses moments that seem impossible to carry out his good, pleasing and perfect will. From student, to Doctor, to Black Business Owner, to Director—my life is a constant reminder to…jump, and watch God blow your mind.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
When I started my career here in Los Angeles, I learned a lot about the suffocating weight women feel when they are diagnosed with infertility. Not only does it shake you to your core, but it leaves you with a burning question—was there anything I could have done to prevent this? What information could have helped me better prepare my fertility for the future? Because Fertility Care does not exist in our current healthcare system, the health of women in the corporate workforce is left to chance—with hopes that once you shatter the proverbial glass ceiling, your body should be able to conceive— But enough is enough. THRYVE GLOBAL was created as a disruptor to the current healthcare framework. As the world’s first, women-led fertility consulting firm, we will function in the entertainment and corporate sphere as a link between corporate wellness and fertility care. We want the space in between Fertility and Infertility to empower you, not terrify you. We have removed access as a barrier to proper preconception health, by integrating whole-healthcare, at your fingertips. Rather in office, on set, or working from home—we have provided designs that reimagine and redefine what is possible for women trying to conceive now or in the future. I feel so honored to serve women in this way. I’m elated to see what the future holds for the Woman of Tomorrow.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
All of my close friends know that working out is always at the top of my list and what better place to work-it-out than Los Angeles! My go-to place for a killer workout is Soul Cycle DTLA or Santa Monica! If you’re a runner, Manhattan Beach has the most killer views and a boardwalk that makes your run both challenging and beautiful. Next, would 100% be a nice brunch at Eveleigh (to die), and shopping at The Grove. *insert a nap here because, over 30* Nightlife for me always includes Drinks at The Rooftop by JG at the Waldorf Astoria, Beverly Hills, followed by dinner at Catch. (The Highlight Room is a close 2nd. The views at both places are amazing!) 10/10 LA Experience. Thank me later. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I dedicate this shoutout to my Angel Mother, Margaret Hammonds. There was never a time in my childhood that she didn’t inspire me to look beyond what I could see. Not only was she supporting me through school, but as a child I watched her work multiple jobs, take care of both of her parents as they developed Alzheimer’s and complete a Master’s Program to become a Teacher. Watching her overcome every possible obstacle in her way, let me know that great things were possible for me, too. She never once asked me to dream smaller or use our limitations as an excuse to settle. She instead forced me to look within and dedicate myself fully to whatever dream God put in my heart. I’ll never be able to fully repay her for how much her support completely changed my life. I love you forever, Mommy. This one’s for you.
