We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Veronica Eyo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Veronica, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
The way that I balance my life and my responsibilities has shifted as I’ve become a mother and have grown my therapy practice. In my work as a therapist, I often talk about how we are not able to do everything. The saying I often say is, “we can have it all but we can’t have it at the same time.” It is something that I remind myself often when I feel like I have dropped the ball in an area in my life. The reality is that this balance is an illusion. Some areas of my life will be thriving and maybe others not so much and that is okay. My priorities shift throughout the day, throughout the week, throughout a season in life, etc and I’ve developed more of a tolerance in being able to do that and accomplish all my tasks and responsibilities.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I have a therapy practice where I primarily see individuals, mostly mothers, seasoned and brand new in navigating the struggles of motherhood. When I transitioned into being a mother, while I joined Mommy and Me groups and sought support, I felt that as an Afrolatina I didn’t have clinicians that looked like me and could speak to my shared experience. I wanted to be that for another mom in need of support. That really is what gets me so excited about the work that I do is when a mother says, “I am so glad to find a therapist that gets me and sees me”. It lights up my heart.

Getting here hasn’t been easy. When I was getting my MSW, I didn’t even know that there was the option of private practice. I have been learning ever since I’ve graduated and I think that is what has helped me evolve and grow as a therapist and a business.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA means one thing…tacos!! I am such a fan of some good tacos from a taco truck. You have to go to East La and get some good tacos. One of the beautiful things about LA is how rich in culture we are. Now, the traffic is hard to navigate but if you can get past that visiting different places in the city to grab you some Ethiopian food or some tacos is the way to go.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The support from my family and friends have been the encouragement that I have needed in my success. My decision to shift my practice into working with mothers happened after I became a mom. A beautiful thing about becoming a parent is seeing how determined my kids are in learning, even if their learning is messy at times, and how they keep going. It is beautiful to witness and that fuels my energy in continuing to do the work that I do for mothers.
