We had the good fortune of connecting with Ani Harutyunyan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ani, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I have started my first business at the age of 21. The idea of working for big corporations was very foreign for me and I wanted to do something that would be creative and inspiring. My connection to food has been shaped from a very young age and since I loved cooking and baking, I decided to pursue my career in the baking industry. After my move to Los Angeles from Armenia, I had spent a lot of time researching other areas for inspiration but once again I proved myself that food plays a very important role in my life and want to continue my journey in that direction but in a new market.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My company specializes in sourdough bread production. Bread is simple and complex at the same time. It comes in 1000 varieties, shapes and tastes. Sadly many people have stopped valuing its importance and that is mainly due to the fact that it has become much harder to find a good quality artisan bread. Industrial revolution had a big effect on that and with time the bread has lost its value as a nutritional food product and also its exceptionally great taste.
The objective of my brand is to reconnect people with real bread and educate them about the importance of eating clean and homemade food in a shape of bread. We try to offer different varieties to suit everyone’s taste buds and preferences.
The biggest challenge is organizing the bake process because sourdough bread requires a lot of time, skill and precision. Some breads might take me 3 days of preparations before it can be baked. Time plays a crucial role in the final taste of the product, therefore I can’t compromise on that. I hope that very soon, we will move back to having small artisan bakeries and bakers’ profession will regain its importance and popularity. Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are many people that have inspired me throughout my life. I might read and article, watch a movie, read a book or have a simple conversations and that will give me a new insight and motivation to push further. My special thanks goes to my family for accepting and treating my passion with great respect. No matter how hard it has been, they have been there to comfort and guide me.
