We had the good fortune of connecting with Eanaj Janae and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Eanaj, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
Risk goes hand and hand with being an artisT. It’s helps push creativity Innovation forward. Art without risk is beautiful but for the most part Art that does take that risk connects to spirit and you can feel something when you see it. It’s greedy and emotional, it ties to your soul, it’s imprinted in your memory Some subjects deserve to be represented and I choose to continue to celebrate ours because of black women.
There has always been a shadow lurking over art careers. Most people would say to pick a safe or more reliable stable career. Many artists are not able to take that leap to be full-time artists. Thank God I am blessed with a support system that allows me to focus on my career as an artist. I am taking a risk and stepping out on faith to become a household name in the art community
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Well I begin painting in 2009 I took 1 weeks Of community college class and had to drop out because the supplies became too expensive but I fell in love with the process I’ve always been a creative person and I thought I wanted to career in fashion design But once I started painting I fell in love.
Being a self-taught artist I began searching for techniques to teach myself how to paint. It was a little bit before the University of YouTube was around so I kind of just begin painting messing up a lot and learning how to blend and color theories on canvases
I began as an abstract artist using different colors and shapes and styles like pours paints and spray paint to create things that represented what was going on in my head. my creativity was always jumbled without having a clear identity of my art style was. just recently I discovered the joy that I have creating for black women. I was looking for artwork to showcase in my room and I noticed that popular places Didnt have many options represent black women the way I thought they should be many times in media there over-sexualized or only looked at for their body. Many Shades we do not represent it as well as body types with the lack of representation I decided to start when I called her project
The Her project was to represent the everyday women and different body types styles colors figuratively And abstractly. I like to use an Afro-futuristic woman to describe the beauty I see. I chose space because it’s beautiful but it’s powerful and infinite.
Though this might be a risky subject I believe it deserves to be represented in our every day. My goal is to have art that represents the new generation in every household.
before the pandemic hit I bought myself an iPad And began my career as a digital artist as well. Digital art is a whole new monster, Thank God for the University of YouTube I was able to learn to procreate techniques pretty quick. Early on in the pandemic, I was able to start a project I called heroes to thank everyone who was an essential worker and had to risk their lives during Covid-19 in 2020. We represented so many people from Walmart workers to nurses doctors fast-food workers, In firefighters, I can send you to get your request from people every day and help jumpstart my career as a paid artist.
Though it’s been difficult working as an full- time artist. You also have to be your own customer service, financial advisor and social media manager as well as the artist it is a rewarding thing people are receiving their products and enjoying the process.
One lesson I’ve learned along the way is that you do have a support from your friends and family but there are a lot of strangers out there that are willing to support you without receiving anything from you they are really good people out there that truly just want you to win
I want the Worlds to know that I see them. I hope everyone is able to see that light in me when they see me or my art. I want the world to know that it’s ok to be yourself even if it doesn’t get the mold.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love going hiking at Runyon Canyon or at Mount Rubidoux very outside girl so I would probably say the Venice Beach because they’re so much for people to see Are Different walks of life there some of my favorite food places if kruaThai Hong Kong plaza, Fat sals and famer boys and bakers And when we open back up I definitely would have to say go roller skating The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this to my family. My family is very much involved in my art career my dad earlier and jumped on the support wagon he even gave me my artist name.My mom helped inspire some of my earliest paintings. My sister Haley Is my partner and it’s always helping us build our business. My sister Lauren is very much my PR it is always thinking on better ways to brand my brand. And then my brothers in Japan he would definitely give me his honest opinion whenever It’s asked for. The laughter in our household the fun and games that we have stimulates my creativity and pushes my career forward and I know that they’re always be there to help At the end of the day
