Meet Edivaldo Fontes | Editor-in-chief at VLM Press and American Dream Magazine, Writer, Business Advisor and Web Developer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Edivaldo Fontes and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Edivaldo, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The decision to start my own business was born out of a deep-rooted passion, an unwavering commitment to addressing gaps in the market, and an unrelenting desire for autonomy. As an industry expert, I have spent years honing my skills and expertise, and in doing so, I have developed an acute awareness of the unmet needs within the industry.
This realization inspired me to create a venture that could innovatively address these challenges. I wanted to chart my path, have complete control over the direction of my business, and pursue my professional goals while making a meaningful contribution to the industry.
The timing felt right. I had the experience, expertise, and network required to embark on this entrepreneurial journey confidently, and I was ready to take on the challenges that came with it. I knew that by leveraging my skills and network, I could establish a venture that would thrive and contribute positively to the industry ecosystem.
Starting my own business has been a rewarding journey that has challenged me, pushed me to be my best, and allowed me to make a significant impact. I am grateful for the opportunity to have undertaken this journey and to have been able to make a meaningful contribution to the industry.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business, VLM Press, is more than just a publishing company; it embodies my passion for helping individuals fulfill their dreams and thrive. Through initiatives such as the American Dream Magazine and the Professional Excellence Awards, I am dedicated to offering guidance, inspiration, and recognition to those who seek to excel in their endeavors. One of the key factors that sets us apart is our unwavering commitment to showcasing stories of resilience, determination, and success. Our publications inform, entertain, uplift, and inspire readers to reach their highest aspirations.
I have faced obstacles and challenges that have catalyzed my growth and learning, shaping me into the person I am today. One particular challenge I faced was to leave my country; at the time, I left my kids and wife behind and moved to the US in search of a better life for us with just 30 dollars in my pocket and a bag of dreams, which taught me the importance of perseverance and adaptability in the face of adversity.
Through these and so many other experiences, I’ve learned that success is not solely defined by achievements but by the positive impact we make on the lives of others. My story is a testament to the transformative power of resilience, determination, and unwavering belief in oneself.
Looking ahead, I envision a future where VLM Press continues to be a beacon of inspiration and empowerment for individuals worldwide. Together, we can create a world where everyone has the opportunity to pursue their dreams relentlessly and develop a life of purpose and fulfillment. The life we live now is a direct result of our own choices, and with the proper guidance, one can learn to make better decisions and reap better fruits in the present and the future.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I am deeply grateful for my family’s unwavering support and inspiration, mainly as I reflect on the immigrant perspective that profoundly shaped my journey. My parents, who now reside in my heart and memories, were the guiding stars of my aspirations. My mother’s lionhearted spirit and unwavering trust in my potential resonate within me, filling each step I take with her courage and resilience. Even in her physical absence, her love and belief in my dreams echo through every achievement. Similarly, my father’s enduring presence in my heart still nurtures my ambitions. His lessons on dreaming big and facing adversity with unwavering determination remain in my soul. Though he may no longer walk beside me, his guidance and wisdom continue to light my path toward success and innovation.
Additionally, my dear aunt Helena Rodrigues, now watching over me from above, played a pivotal role in shaping my early years. Her encouragement and unwavering support were like gentle whispers of encouragement, urging me forward during times of uncertainty. Though I can no longer feel her embrace, her spirit lives on in the seeds of greatness she planted within me.
Furthermore, my beloved grandmother, Maria Batista da Silva, forever resides in the fabric of my being. Her passion for language learning and worldly exploration ignited a flame within me that continues to burn brightly. Her stories and wisdom expanded my horizons and fueled my desire for global engagement. Though her earthly journey has ended, her legacy of curiosity and love lives on within me.
Collectively, my dear family members, though physically absent, continue to shape my identity and journey as an immigrant entrepreneur. Their love, encouragement, and belief in my potential guide my pursuit of success. Though they may no longer walk this earth, their spirits dance within me, a constant reminder of their profound impact on my life.
In addition to the love and guidance of my family, the Bible has been my steadfast companion, providing solace and direction in my darkest hours. However, one book that stands out as particularly transformative in my life is “Help Yourself Through Psychiatry” by Frank S. Caprio, MD. Following a car accident that impaired my short-term memory, this book became a beacon of hope, reshaping my perspective and aiding in my personal growth. It served as a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the power of knowledge to transform lives.
