We had the good fortune of connecting with Edwin Schaap and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Edwin, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I used to work day and night, out of passion, but also because I wanted to learn as much as possible. My view back then: The more I make, the more experience I have. Now I’m a little older I also learned that taking a break is just as important. To ‘live’ and gain experiences in life will give you the inspiration and experience you can implement in your ideas for new work.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m excited the way my road has been toward where I’m at now. From making amateur videos in my backyard in rural hometown Wanroij, dreaming of working on movies. I always have had a passion and goals and dreams to strive for. I feel I’ve never forced it in a way that I was stressed I ‘wouldn’t make it”. What’s “making it” anyways. You just do what you love and see what’s coming on your path. I think what sets me apart from others is I know where to put priorities, which makes me work very efficient and fast. Which is very appreciated in my field. Working fast is very useful when blocking out ideas. Exploring new areas keeps me busy too. I’ve been spending more time on writing and directing live action and soon my short film Übel will be out!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a Dutch foreigner myself here, I always take friends and family to the famous Hollywood signs. It’s a great symbol that I’ve longed to see when I was a kid.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to do a Shoutout to Framestore. Back in 2012 I did an internship at their London Office, Soon after they asked me to work for them and now, 8 years later I’m very happy to work at their LA office. An awesome company to work for!
