We had the good fortune of connecting with Edwin Tanu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Edwin, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Growing up in a family of architects and creative entrepreneurs, I was always surrounded by the exciting world of design. We, as a family, had each other’s backs and were all about pushing boundaries and coming up with new ideas. Our creative projects were more like team efforts, where everyone aimed to surprise the others with fresh, unexplored concepts. The thrill of expressing my creativity and receiving appreciation fueled my passion for diving into a career in industrial design – something I’m really into.

This journey is like a mix of everything I love, enjoy, and have learned throughout my life. It’s a nod to the family vibes, the creative adventures we embark on, and the constant pursuit of extraordinary things that have shaped my path in the exciting world of industrial design

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
As an industrial designer, I love the process of innovation. I defy the status quo by taking a deep dive into what’s expected in order to find what’s unexpected. Whether I’m crafting the entire system or a physical product it’s about discovering the balance between streamlined functionality and refined aesthetics. My design philosophy is a culmination of my upbringing in a family of designers, engineers, and entrepreneurs, coupled with the challenges I faced during my years at ArtCenter College of Design.

The journey was far from easy, especially graduating during the pandemic. Despite the hurdles, I persevered, unwavering in my pursuit of passion. Today, I take pride in being one of the lead designers at a prominent design consultancy in LA. I have the privilege of doing what I love the most while making a significant impact through my design work.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Los Angeles boasts an abundance of captivating destinations waiting to be explored. When hosting my best friend’s visit, my itinerary would kick off with a tour of the city’s iconic landmarks, including the renowned LACMA, the Getty Museum, Griffith Park, Disneyland, Universal Studios, Farmer’s Market, Santa Monica, etc. Following this iconic adventure, I’d unveil the hidden gems of LA, embarking on a leisurely drive to Angeles Crest for a breathtaking panoramic view of the city lights, etc. Both experiences are equally thrilling and unforgettable.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a big shoutout to the key players in every part of my journey. A huge thank you to my family, especially my brother Arvin. He’s not just a brother; he’s been my mentor and partner in all things fun and exciting. His constant support has been like a guiding light for me. I also want to express my gratitude to my parents for always supporting my love for design, the thing that gets me going. A big thumbs up to all the instructors at ArtCenter College of Design – they’re the ones who helped me understand the true essence of design.

Last but not least, a big thanks to Ristich for giving me the chance to make my designs impactful for more people. Each of these folks played a special role in shaping my journey, and I’m genuinely thankful for their guidance, support, and the opportunities they’ve given me.
