We had the good fortune of connecting with Efrain Flores and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Efrain, how do you think about risk?
I think risks are awesome! I think they are necessary to live the ideal life that you want. Without risk there’s no story but I think it works both ways. You see when you take risks it can either succeed or fail. Either way you’re growing from success and failure so risks are necessary to grow into the person you wanna be. I took many risks in my life and they either failed or succeeded but let me tell you; from the ones that did succeed payed off from all the ones that did fail. If it wasn’t for me to take risks, I’ll probably still be working at that Asian Restaurant I so desperately wanted to get out of. I probably still would’ve been shining spoons and forks instead of Acting, Making Music and Film. I’m very happy for the way it all worked out for me and it is still the beginning.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets me apart from others is the fact that I’m already Efrain Flores. I’m excited to just be myself as an artist because I already know how grounded and creative I can be. The way my brain works, the way I do things, the way I’m just freaking curious about what I can do and just get away with. Even if it doesn’t work out I know I keep it moving. If you wanna be where I’m at professionally, my advice to you is don’t be a professional. Always be a student, always keep learning, don’t be afraid to make mistakes, and always have your doors open for new opportunities. It’s not easy, but if you love doing something so much and want it bad enough you start to just do it without thinking about how hard it is. You just do it, work hard for it. And if you have to think about how long the road is gonna be then it’s not for you. I overcome any challenge by wanting to see what’s on the other side of it. I’ve learned that it’s better to keep moving forward then just be stuck in the same place you were last year, and that life we only get one so we shouldn’t waste it being sad all the time about what could’ve been and the past just let it go and control your life moving forward. You thing you should know about me is that I’m still growing and learning a lot about myself so no one is alone in this. In my story there’s a lot of trauma and it’s something that you take with you wherever you go but that’s what makes you who you are so take what’s good from that.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I mean I love doing everything so depending on the person I can do whatever they want. I have friends who would visit me just to work on stuff and others to go see LA together. My favorite things to do are very simple. I like going to views where you can see the city from a distance. I love walking around the nicest parts of town. I love sitting down at Cafes or just watching a movie. I’m a pretty simple guy.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’ll like to give a shoutout to death because it made me realize that we are all gonna die one day so before I do die Ima make sure I am a part of this experience, this life you know! You see, when you accept death that it’s gonna happen, you realize that life you have has to be taken advantage of because they might not be another life. You may not get another chance but what is for sure is right here right now. You are alive right now and that’s all that should be important so go out there and live it. For me, it motivated me in a way to just say “F**k it” and become the person I know I can become. There’s so much potential in me and I am not gonna let it go to waste. So yeah shout out to death for keeping me going.
