We had the good fortune of connecting with EJ Gregory and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi EJ, why did you pursue a creative career?
THERE IS NOTHING ELSE FOR ME! I tried the office/cubical life and I wanted to scream LOL. I’ve always enjoyed creating; there is something so euphoric about traveling to a place in you mind where the possibilities are endless. Being able to conceptualize and in some instances pioneer moments that become history just takes my breath away. I honestly never set out to have a creative career, it was just destined! Witnessing the women in my family be strong and unapologetic, I feel shaped the direction my artistic voice is showcased. I do remember the moment I realized a creative career was conceivable, when I got hired at MAC! LET ME TELL YOU!!!! My first day was a Level A, right before a lunch rush, during a visit (if you know you know lol). I assisted a client that wanted an anniversary glam. While doing her makeup, I could visually see her inner strength more present than when we initially began. After we wrapped she flipped her hair and blew me a kiss (I loved it)!! That next week both her and the husband came in to say thank you!!! I was completely caught off guard, that was the birth of my journey as a professional creative.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a makeup artist who also creative directs and occasionally does hair. The ability to construct a visual moment from scratch is what I do. I’ve had the opportunity to travel and showcase my artistry for very beautiful people, but my favorite complement I ever receive is ” I feel “! Thats when I know I’ve done what was needed. It’s said “You won’t always remember what was said but you will remember how you felt” knowing that has really been the stitching of my career. The excursion of being an independent creator is not for the faint of heart. There are so many moments of uncertainty, disbelief, tears and phone calls to mom crying saying I wanna come home lol. However, there are an equal amount of astonishing moments; The connections you make, the trust in yourself you gain , faith that God will always protect and lead you . It’s a constant evolution of who you are and what you want to see within yourself and your canvas. Definitely, being a BLACK creator (that is a completely different topic) makes nothing easy but I refuse to be told what is an option for me and my family! I’ve learned that the moment you give up is when it’s over! Never put a time frame on your destiny.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
In a life pre COVID First, we would definitely get some food (they probably will have a list of places to try in hand already lol) oh and we most definitely will hit up a dispensary (Calma, Herberium) make our way down to the beach after that just relax no real schedule because if your vacationing you don’t want to spend your time thinking of what’s next, we just do as we feel.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There are an overwhelming amount of people who have been instrumental in my development, I wish I could acknowledge you all! To the family and friends on this leg of my journey or past legs, your time, commitment and love will always remain as I continue to grow and evolve. I pray your support for me manifests itself in such a prosperous way in you life. There are a few special SHOUTOUTS I must bestow. Above all GOD he is the reason I breathe and exist, My mom (Tangela) for her undying love, strength and continuous support, my baby sisters ( DJ, Keke and Cece) thank you for everything!!! Granny (Nene) love you so much thank you for being the best granny ever!!! My piece of heaven (Larry) and our babies (Mutha and Selina) thank you all for loving and uplifting me. Truly!!! I also want to shout myself out for not giving up and continuing to believe that even in this world today that I still can achieve my dream.
