We had the good fortune of connecting with Eko Zu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Eko, can you tell us about an impactful book you’ve read and why you liked it or what impact it had on you?
“Life” by Keith Richards has the purest, most direct tone of any bio I’ve ever read. Reading the book makes you feel as if you’re in the room with Keith, listening to him recount his craziest moments. I’ve been hooked on artist biographies for basically all of quarantine. I used to read mostly fiction but the life stories of some of our favorite musicians are absolutely mind blowing. Who doesn’t love a fun, fascinating life story? I learned about open G tuning on guitar, cutting off the low E string (according to Keith it just gets in the way), which was a big part of the Rolling Stones sound and hits. Most of all reading this book (and any artist bio) humanizes the artist in a way that makes them feel more relatable, and their success more achievable. Reading their story and experiencing life through their eyes also empowers you to think and make decisions roughly from their perspective.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Going to concerts are most of my earliest recollections. Seeing The Ramones when I was 3 or so, with my parents, is a fuzzy first memory. I think that the energy of live music is where I feel most at home. It doesn’t seem a coincidence that I gravitated toward music and for my life’s work. Nothing else was even an option. Most of my 20’s, I worked in my shadow career. What I mean is I was working in a profession (Front of House Sound Engineer) that tied into what my passion was, and was closely related, but not fulfilling what I was born to do– make and perform my own music. While working as a Front of House, I got to see the artists I most respected night after night, studying their show and learning from their successes (and mistakes). I toured with The Glitch Mob, The Chainsmokers, Bassnectar, and Big Wild, domestic and international, and loved learning from them. One day on tour, one of the Glitch Mob members (knowing I was a music producer at heart) graciously told me that when I was ready to stop touring as a sound engineer, and fully focus on music, that he and the band would understand. That day came about two years later, when they asked me to tour with them again, and I had to make one of the hardest decisions of my life– continue to tour the world with some of my peers that I respected most? Or pursue my own career in making my music? I took the leap of faith, and will never question going with my gut, as hard as it was to walk away from a gig that many people would give everything to have. Since then I’ve been living out my dream and as long as the persistence is there, things will work out for the best.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Eaton Canyon falls! An easy hike and one of LA’s most serene sanctuaries. Probably a concert (post-Covid) at one of the countless fun venues in LA, like Station 1640, Sound, The Echo, 1720, Belasco Theatre…there’s an endless scene for dance music. Sushi or Ramen almost literally anywhere, check Yelp if you’re having trouble deciding… And the beach of course! Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
This one goes out to my manager Matt Eckstrom! He wears many hats, from his record label LoFreq Records, to his event productions (LoFreq Events), and managing an amazing roster of artists via Subspace Mgmt. Truly an honor to work with this team, feel free to peep! https://www.instagram.com/subspacetalent/ https://www.instagram.com/lofreqevents/ https://subspacemgmt.com/
