Meet Elham Gordi | poet

We had the good fortune of connecting with Elham Gordi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Elham, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
I feel my daily walks and being able to observe nature especially the trees and paying attention to the way their leafs are, feeling their textures, smelling their unique scents and being able to speak and to listen to them, has been inspiring me. I believe we can make something special from every ordinary daily habit such as listening to people’s conversations about their morning drink. I want to say everything has an origin story even objects and when you are able to connect with what is around you, it becomes part of your writing experience. We have the power to turn simple things into the extraordinary, and then they become the legacy of the ordinary.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I can consider myself as the pursuant of life, as someone who brings the past to life with words; My past, present and future is all about the words.
I go through normality to be able to break it and by deconstructing it, making something new. Therefore, everything for me starts with madness; that means insanity is a big part of being a poet. What is challenging is not to fit in the social norms and expectations.
I’ve learned from my experiences that there are no limitation within creativity and you shouldn’t get stuck in the world you have created.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Defiantly The Broad, Getty and Huntington Library. regarding the food, I would take them to Larchmont Village to have local food to support small business and later to my favorite book store “skylight’ in Vermont. to have fun and remembering our childhood, I’ll take them to the Bob Baker Marionette theatre. watching Theatre at the Actor’s Gang and for movie, “look” Theatre at Glendale.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d love to thank my uncle Saeed for introducing me to the Persian literature before he was taken by the sea and leaving his youth and his dreams to inspire me. I also like to shoutout to my literature teacher in middle school who encouraged me and gave me the confidence to write. The most important shoutout goes to immigration which gave me the opportunity to understand my culture in a different perspective.
