We had the good fortune of connecting with Emilio Gonzalez and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emilio, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I think taking risk is always important, when you know when to take them. A big part of music is communication and stepping out of your comfort zone to meet another musician or reach out to someone that you look up to. It might lead to a strong connection with that person. Whenever a musician inspires me or something excites me, I feel the need to reach out and tell them how much of an impression they’ve made on me, then I kinda give them a general idea of what I do, so maybe in the future they might find more of an interest to hear me perform.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love writing and creating a unique style of music. My band mentions that I have a thing for weird chords, but still manage to write catchy creative tunes. Sometimes I’ll make up stories or write about my life or what’s happening around me. I’ve learned that you can’t compare yourself to others, be unique and be different, you’ll find paths no one else has seen before.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them downtown and go to a few bars. Hopefully catch some other music acts around the area. Discovering new places with someone is always my favorite thing, not only will the person I bring be learning about new places, but I might discover someplace new as well.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My band definitely deserves some recognition. They’ve been with me through thick and thin, I wouldn’t have the fullness of my music if it wasn’t for them. Raquel Rosenwald is the lead guitarist. Grace Quackenboss is the pianist. Kyle Aronson is the drummer. Isaiah Smith is the Bass player
