We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Cummings and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, how do you think about risk?
I think that risk taking is instrumental when it comes to building a business. If you are committed to always playing it safe then you will never move beyond the confines of your comfort zone. I took a huge risk in leaving my corporate career in order to become a Yoga Instructor. Each time that I stood up in from of rooms full of people, I took a risk in teaching authentically and from the heart. I’ve taken many risks in my business, some have been successful in moving me forward towards my goals, and some have been successful in teaching me what works and what doesn’t work for my business. Taking risks, is like jumping out of an airplane and having total trust that your parachute will open and that your feet will eventually touch the Earth again. Without faith you would never jump. Part of being successful is being able to trust the process, and trust that you’re always supported, it’s being able to let go of attachment to the outcomes of your choices and trust that everything is working out ultimately for your highest good.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
After years of teaching, and developing my own personal style based off a lifetime of movement training in dance, yoga, and Pilates, and incorporating my love of deep and soulful music, the vision for the brand Body Language was born. The idea began as a weekly class at one of my studios and has now grown into an online community, offering high quality produced classes, tutorials, e-books, live streamed classes, and more, with plans to release a clothing line and branded merchandise soon. The Body Language brand is all about empowering people to feel good in their bodies- and to not be afraid to access deeper feelings and emotions that arise when we allow ourselves to move freely. The work of the brand is to introduce people to the philosophy of yoga – teaching people how to understand energetics, and heal themselves through practices of deeper self awareness, and understanding. I’m really excited about the future that I am creating with my business. I can’t wait to continue to expand my offerings, and provide more ways for people to access this work because I believe so powerfully in its ability to transform lives. I’m proud of myself for holding the vision and continuing to show up even when things felt extremely difficult and hopeless. The process of building this brand really forced me to practice what I preach. I often tell my students to be patient with their practice, and to trust the process. I have very much had to surrender to that advice over the past few years, and its been well worth it. What I want people to know about my brand is that we are here to co-create together. My students and my community have had a huge and lasting impact on me and what I create. If you’re drawn to this work and to this vibe, then with an open mind together we can create magic in our lives.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had a friend visiting the area I would definitely take them downtown, to a class at my studio Boheme. We could then do lunch at the Freehand and lay by the pool. In the evening we could visit some galleries downtown, like Hive and Innerspace, and grab a drink and nice meal at Woodspoon. While they were here I would make sure to take them down to Venice Beach and walk along the boardwalk. We could head over to Abbot Kinney for drinks and delicious food after that. I would love to show them all of the beautiful nature that surrounds the city, we could make a day trip to Joshua tree as well. I’d make sure while they were here to take them to see as much art and music as possible, as well as make sure they experience the diverse culture LA has to offer.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There have been so many people who have been instrumental in helping me along my path. A Yoga teacher would truly be nothing without her community. My family and friends have helped me through my most difficult times, and have believed in me and my vision without question. There have been so many other teachers, and studio owners who have influenced me and mentored me, and students who have become co-collaborators and friends. I would be nothing without the support of the people I love, and for that I am so grateful.
