We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Eizen and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, why did you pursue a creative career?
I have always been a creative person. In school, I was always the one doodling and scribbling on every piece of paper, my shoes, and even my skin. I loved printing out and cutting up pictures and making collages. I felt very much like an outcast starting in 5th grade. Luckily, in 6th grade I found art as a serious mode of self expression and was taken under the wing of my art teacher. I ate lunch in the art room every day, and started taking painting lessons outside of school.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Starting out over 7 years ago as a budtender in pre-recreational cannabis dispensaries, Emily Eizen has witnessed the boom of the new industry firsthand. Growing her career from budtender into a full-time creative director, multimedia artist and photographer, Eizen has become a well known source of creativity not only in the cannabis space, expanding her portfolio print editorial, lifestyle, music and CPGs. The focuses of her work center around creating imagery that incorporates all subjects, bringing femme energy and diversity to an industry lacking in both of these areas. Through her colorful and vibrant photography, Eizen has made it her personal and professional mission to use art as a vehicle for social change.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I would definitely take them to Malibu to the beach for a day of smoking, picnic, and Malibu Seafood. I would also take them to rainbow night at Moonlight rollerway. Melrose Place farrmers market on sundays. The Kettle in Manhattan Beach, and the Broad Museum downtown. Lake Hollywood Park with a picnic from The Oaks market (vegan herro sandwiches).

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My most “formative” times feel like a collection of moments that I’ve spent with other women in the cannabis space and now the LA queer creative scene as a whole. Especially when I first started, I was surrounded by a lot of creative women that really inspired me to pursue this as a career. And I think that those memories are what really inform my work today.” A few people in cannabis are Roze Volca, Nesha Torres, Dane Diseth, and Zoe Wilder. SOme other creatives are Randijah Simmons, Melian J, and Diallo Mitch.
