We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Lieh and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Emily, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I’ve discovered that when I find the time to ensure that I maintain my living space, I have work life balance. Instead of mindlessly scrolling on social media or chatting about what went wrong at work, I ensure that I have time to relax and to do what I need to do at home like taking out the trash or washing my dishes. I, additionally, try to have the time to walk and exercise enough to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Having balance, to me, is to not overwork or overstrain to remain steady. I definitely want to maintain a work life balance.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I initially began sharing food pictures on Instagram, and it started as a way for me to share food pictures with other people. Then I shared more about myself and life experiences such as visiting a Dallas art museum, posing in a summer outfit at a Cincinnati park, a photo of a fashion runway in Columbus, and faith.

Eventually, it became a vehicle for my life with fashion. I shared pictures of my life in Los Angeles with outfits in various public locations and my home at the time. I’ve, since then, shared nature pictures, snapshots of my outfits and life experiences in other U.S. cities.

Maintaining an Instagram account dedicated to fashion wasn’t without the challenges. I found myself balancing a full time job with my demands of ensuring that I could have an output of creativity online and in person. I strived to maintain a work life balance by ensuring that I did self care, exercised, and maintained my living space.

A lesson that I’ve learned is to not overschedule myself and take the time that I needed to do my best work. Being persistent and showing up despite the setbacks has given me the opportunities to succeed in life and career.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would visit rooftops at The Standard, Freehand Los Angeles, and other hotels to show friends the city skyline. I would take them to Venice Beach to visit the ocean and to enjoy the sand. We would visit Abbot Kinney to view the stores and shop. We would visit Wabi on Rose, In-N-Out Burger, Cava, and other restaurants. We could visit The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, Intelligentsia Coffee, and other coffee shops during our walks to other sightseeing spots. Some other places that we would check out are the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, The Hammer Museum, The Museum of Contemporary Art, The Griffith Observatory, and Griffith Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to thank my sisters, parents, and friends.
