Meet Emily Nader | Nutrition & Health Coach, Fitness & Strength Coach

We had the good fortune of connecting with Emily Nader and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emily, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Everyone has their own “work life balance.” Some people might think of it as a certain number of hours working, and the rest of the hours of their life doing “whatever they want.” The magic number people seem to have in their head is 40 hours working. Or maybe a number of days per week on-the-job, like four or five.
The truth is, this is made up. Who said this? Who dictates your work life balance? You do. What does this even mean? What do you consider “work”? Stuff you don’t want to do? Actions toward a particular goal (one that you feel might not even be yours)? Time spent not sleeping?
To me, part of my definition of work means “on” and “producing.” (Work = Force x Displacement) –> (energy & movement around goals)
My idea of work life balance has changed since I quit the corporate job I hated, started doing something I love, and working on side projects that energize me. I am in a point in my life where I am building. That requires resources like energy and time. Yes, it can be tiring, but I love it. I love working toward something bigger. It’s all about the bigger picture in mind. What are you working toward? Why are you working in the first place?
I’m always working toward something. Purpose. Purpose doesn’t stop. Purpose is there there seven days a week.
Since starting my own business, work life balance for me has become doing something everyday that brings me even a little bit closer to my goals. It can be small too. There are very rarely any days where I sit around doing absolutely nothing for 16 hours that doesn’t put me in the direction or continuously working toward my goals. Taking a day to rest can also be considered forward movement to your goals.
Rest is important. I do prioritize it when I can feel I need it, so I stay rejuvenated, but I rarely take an entire day to do it. What does “rest” mean? It’s different for everybody. To me, my rest activities include a quick nap, a read in a hammock (relevant materials, still learning, still considered work?), journaling (this could all still be considered work here as sometimes I use for captions and blogs), playing beach volleyball, etc.,
Work life balance is made up. It can be whatever you want it to be – more freedom if you work for yourself 🙂 though, if you work for yourself, what do you categorize as work?
There’s lots of lessons to learn in this life. If you can master this one, you got it.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
As a Strength and Nutrition Coach with a Holistic style of coaching, my clients receive an extremely well-rounded service and find solutions to their problems they may never have thought of before. Every person has their own unique experiences and ideas that make them who they are. Not one person is the same as another. The same goes in nature. Even trees of the same type have their own uniqueness that makes them their own, and distinguishes them from the rest. This is how I work with my clients.
There are general ideas and principles to adopt about Nutrition, Health, and Fitness, and how they are applied to you as the individual is just that, up to you. What may be best for one person, may not be best for another, and that’s okay. We can embrace our uniqueness 🙂
Personal health struggles like ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, PCOS that were at one point deteriorating me, I now view as strengths. They’ve led me to what I am doing in my business now; helping other people cope with mental and physical health diagnoses in a natural way that make them feel strong.
Imposter Syndrome and other limiting beliefs have been a battle that I’ve been working on over the years. Feeling like I’m not enough, or that I can’t actually help people, or that I even deserve the success I’m experiencing, has been tough. The doubt that can try to creep in is scary. I continuously work on myself to understand and know that I have value to offer and that I am deserving of success.
I am so proud of myself for taking a leap of faith in officially establishing my business. Some people say you don’t absolutely need to do that in the beginning, but it’s what I needed for me to truly feel like I was working toward my mission and recognizing my service as legitimate.
I am still learning and growing and always will be. I keep myself open to new opportunities at all times, whatever that may be; new collaborations, an opportunity to work for another company to increase a skill, and even learning a completely new skill to add another tool to the tool belt. Learning keeps me humble and increases my versatility, making me more valuable to my clients, myself, and my business.
Allowing room for growth, allows for endless possibilities 🙂
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The best time ever to me is hanging by the beach, playing volleyball, and eating delicious foods. I would take my friend to some of my favorite spots and also use it as an opportunity to try new places for myself and be a tourist in my own city.
I am of course a health nut, so I appreciate places like Kreation and other conscious juice bars and cafes. I have favorite salads at different restaurants in the South Bay, Joey is one of them. I don’t drink very often, but with a friend in town I might enjoy a cocktail or hard kombucha on a rooftop at golden hour. Live music and dancing is one of my favorite pleasures in life, so I’d find a spot with some jazz in the evening and then off to the discoooo at night.
I love meeting new people and making new friends, so anywhere in this city is great to do that 🙂
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Shoutout to MOM AND DAD for everything you do for me, birthing me, raising me, surrounding me with good people, good values, and lots of love and support to go after what I need to go after. And to all the special people in my life, you know who you are 🙂
