We had the good fortune of connecting with Akiko Coats and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akiko, why did you pursue a creative career?
I simply followed my passion for creating flower arrangements that touch people’s lives. That is what keeps me working on projects and events no matter how hard the conditions are. For weddings, flowers play such an important role as they recorded in wedding photos and videos that people cherish throughout their lives. My heart is filled with joy when customers share with me their wedding photos with my bouquets and flower arrangements, My main goal is not to create a profitable business or expanding my brand, but to provide the most memorable flowers to inspire and brighten up people’s lives.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My strength is the delicate color coordination of flower arrangements. I implement color schemes to enhance the beauty of flowers with applying tint, shade and highlight just like in painting. All the hues and colors of flowers have different tones and shades. For example, “white flowers” can be in different shades of blush pink, cream, lime green or snow white. Greenery has different tones to express emotions and create seasons. Flower arrangements are created with the intention of conveying the energy of love, passion, appreciation, or comfort with different tones of colors. Hand-picking flowers while visualizing how the colors work together is my strength to create a work of art.
It entails time-consuming preparation, purchasing the perfect color schemes of flowers at the best timing prior to the events, and tireless physical labor to provide all the floral arrangements. The whole process requires flexibility and instincts to deal with unexpected resource shortage issues affected by the pandemic, climate change and the war.
I work with several very reliable wholesales markets, and building great relationships with them helps me a lot to overcome the ongoing challenges. Through having appreciation and a positive attitude I’ve always been able to get the perfect flowers for my needs.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the South Bay Area where I live and work. They have great food, especially the best Japanese restaurants that our friends who are visting from out of town always love and enjoy so much. Driving along the coast and walking on the beach is amazing. The sunset view on the cliffs of the Palos Verdes Peninsula is breathtaking and wonderful treat at the end of the day.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to thank my wonderful husband, precious two daughters, the truly supportive friends around me, and the SGI Buddhist community. My mentor in life, Daisaku Ikeda, inspired me to pursue my dreams and believe in my potential that I have a mission to fulfill in my life. I thank my family in Japan. who raised and nurtured me. They always loved flowers and plants, and naturally my passion grew from that family environment.
