Meet Emmanuel Camacho Larios | Artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Emmanuel Camacho Larios and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Emmanuel, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
Persistence

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Today, I view myself as an emerging multimedia artist. I am interested in different forms of making but have been enthralled by sculptural and performative methods recently. I am very interested in community-making when it comes to my practice. My primary medium of choice has been the hoja de maiz. The corn husk is a rigid, delicate material that has deep roots in Meso-American cultures. I have been interested in exploring labor within the immigrant communities that I belong to. This material has allowed me to create fictional and personal narratives that tie the cosmos, our ancestral histories, labor, and our immigrant plight. I think I am most excited about further exploring this material as well as other methods of making that further involve my communities. As an emerging artist, I am still at the beginning of my artistic career; I have so much to explore. When it comes to art opportunities, such as grants and residencies, there have been several rejections. But there have also been wonderful opportunities that came from folks witnessing and believing in my work. I have learned to engage as much as possible with those who believe in me. I don’t view myself as a brand, as I don’t seek to sell myself or my practice. But I think for those who find me and my artistic practice, in whatever medium, is to engage when possible. View and connect to experiences of their lives that resonate the most.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I am still new to the city and still getting used to the communities of the valley. I think the spaces that feel most like home for me are the spaces that inspire me the most. I am thinking about Plaza del Valle out in Panorama City. Driving down Whittier Blvd in East Los from work. Or walking the callejones inspired by the colors, textures, and foods sold throughout the streets.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Robin Hill is the first person to come to mind. Robin was my professor and a mentor during my undergraduate career. Her guidance allowed me to persist and advocate for myself as an artist.
