We had the good fortune of connecting with Erica Qing and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erica, alright, let’s jump in with a deep one – what’s you’re definition for success?
I define success by how many lives I can change. It’s important that my brand symbolizes strength, confidence and inspire others to see those same things within themselves. Doing something for yourself is great, but if it didn’t make a difference in the lives of those around you who may be paying attention to the moves you make, it just doesn’t cut it for me. I put a lot of passion behind the moves I make because they all go hand in hand when it comes to the end result. A great man who has inspired me a great deal once said “Find your purpose or you wasting air” -Nip. Success for me is finding my purpose. Success for me is knowing that I’m inspiring someone to find there’s and live in that purpose. Success for me is waking up every day knowing that the person I birthed into this world is proud of me. Success for me is putting myself in position to be able to give others opportunities to put themselves in better positions. Success for me is being able to be fearless when it comes to betting on myself. Success for me is being an example of what I preach and believe in. Success for me is healing. Success for me is not being a victim of my past, my environment or my circumstances. Success for me is knowing God and trusting the guidance that has been placed on my heart. Success for me is knowing that each one of my projects are connected to the confidence of what it means to be a Qing. Success for me is making an income while making an impact. Success for me is knowing that no matter what obstacles life will drag me through, I am THE ONE that can make a difference and there can never be another like me.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Erica is the name that was given to me at birth, but I gave myself the name Qing because it’s an equal representation of a man and woman which we all have came from. It’s the foundation to who we are and ultimately who we will become. I created my brand to represent a number of things that make us feel powerful from what we wear, how we view ourselves physically and eternally. I started with writing my first book which is still in the works called “The Metamorphosis of a Qing”. This book will be describing my journey throughout the year of the new decade. New decade meant new beginnings for me and I had a few planned. I had just launched my brow business “Brows &’ Qings”. Unfortunately, I had to take a backseat when covid shut everything down. I then knew this year was going to be more interesting than I thought and continued writing, using each month as a new chapter. I’ve always been a writer since my younger years and wanted to share my perspective on ways to heal through living in your purpose and just all around becoming the best version of yourself through adversity. I feel like before you embark on anything life changing, you have to be mindful of how you think and react to the challenges you’re going to encounter during those changes. When I decided early 2018 that I wanted to become a permanent makeup artist, I was going to school to become a pharmacy technician. While I was doing that, I was stalking the Microblading techniques and the benefits that come along with the profession. I had already felt that being in the medical field wasn’t suitable for me and wanted to do something more fitting that could support the lifestyle I saw myself living. I’ve always been naturally good at doing eyebrows and would always get stopped by people who would compliment me or just assume I was a makeup artist. Although I use to do makeup a few years back, I wanted to step it up a notch and decided to invest in a training course two months before completing school. I had already started buying the necessities while creating my business Brows &’ Qings. I knew I wanted to do multiple things in my life, but I figured doing brows amongst other procedures would carry the beauty side of things. in 2017 I became interested in designing high fashion clothing and created some mockups that I never released. I use to question what made certain clothing so eye catching and why specific brands made people feel luxurious. I tapped into my creative side and curated a brand called the “Erica Qing Collection” that would symbolize the quality of how each person should feel. I took a risk and took some of the money I had saved up to invest in getting some shirts made just to start with. I then invested in some marketing that would later help my business get the notoriety I’m looking for. I’ll just say that my clothes will definitely be on some familiar faces come 2021. The goal is for my collection to stand alongside other luxurious designer clothing and be represented as such with an even more luxurious meaning behind it. Between me becoming an author, a permanent makeup artist and fashion designer, I’ve found a way to reach my ultimate goal which is making people feel empowered. My journey will show what it takes to be blessed with different skillsets that all tie into one purpose. The hardest part about doing all of this is taking risk, balancing mommy life and being an example of what I want to represent. Even on a bad day I have to make sure I live by what I’m inspiring others to do. I’ve had countless breakdowns, discouragements and thoughts of if I’ll actually be able to handle the responsibility that comes with being this entrepreneurial inspiration. I know I didn’t mention before, but I’m also a dope ghost writer for music and a great artist in the drawing/painting department. I just haven’t monetized those talents yet, but I plan to eventually. Honestly, having more than a few great talents that I love equally with only 24 hours in each day is the real struggle. I knew early on that I was too good to follow traditionalism. I was too different. I craved to do something that would be fulfilling to my soul and make sense to my existence. Otherwise, I would’ve been miserable settling for a lifestyle that just pays my bills every month. I watched so many old heads do that and get to an age where they wish they would’ve done more. Well, I say do more while your young and make it worthwhile. Make it count for something. Having multiple streams of income is essential this day and age. I’m excited to know that the seeds I’m planting now will benefit those around me, my daughter and the future generations to come. That’s what I do it for. I want to have the freedom in knowing that I worked smarter, not harder. The best part is that I’m just getting started, but the masses will know who Erica Qing is and what I’m about.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To be honest, the only favorite spot I have in the city would be the beach, Malibu and Manhattan beach to be specific. I feel like it doesn’t get much better than that in the city. It’s nothing but peace there. There’s nothing better than listening to the waves of the ocean and just reflecting on life, enjoying the nature of it all. I love going there to clear my mind and meditate on the moment. My ultimate go-to food spot is Belizean Paradise. I’m always in the mood for them. I’m also a huge fan of Grilled Fraiche when I want a healthier alternative. The best food spots in LA I would say are the food trucks though. The Bleu Kitchen and Happy Ice are currently my favorite ones if you want some gourmet food and have a sweet tooth. A lot of what use to be my favorite food spots are no longer in business unfortunately and it still depresses me. I’m not really a drinker, but if I wanted a drink, I would go to Cabo Cantina in West Hollywood. It’s always a vibe there.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout all the people who have supported me since the beginning no matter how many times I switched directions when it came to my hustles. I have to thank my best friend Samson(Niffty) for always telling me the right things and being a positive example of work/life balance. I also have to give a shoutout to the big dawg himself Derrick Grace II for fueling me with the knowledge I utilize today that is currently transforming my life and just being a prime representation of what it means to stick to your script and minding thy business that pays. Any person who has paid attention to my journey and told me that I inspired them, thank you because that’s why I’m not letting up. Last, but definitely not least, thanks to my lovely friend Tymera Finley for believing in me and bringing my name up in rooms with opportunities.
