We had the good fortune of connecting with Ericka Woods and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ericka, do you have any habits that you feel contribute to your effectiveness?
My number one rule is ALWAYS being Consistent, during times when I wanted to give up I always remembered why I started and how many people can benefit from what I do.
Success can mean different things to different people.
But whatever it means to you, getting into the right mind-frame and having the right attitude will help you to get there.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I currently have a non profit organization that’s dedicated to proving support and a sisterhood for mother’s. We bond from our experiences and monthly volunteer opportunities to give back in our community.
Being a teen mom sometimes comes with challenges, one challenge I faced was behavioral issues with my oldest son. During that time I was unable to find any support for parents going through the same thing, so in 2014 I created a Facebook group called 1Mother2Another. Motivated by my own persevering life story, I provide the mothers of 1M2A with a message of courage, empowerment, inspiration and offer a safe haven for them to express themselves.
1M2A currently has a membership of over 4300 mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, moms-to-be, and guardians, nationally and internationally of all ages.
One of the main priorities of 1M2A is service, my love for giving back inspired me to incorporate monthly volunteer opportunities for everyone to get involved with helping our community. Serving the homeless population of the city of Detroit is my personal passion. That passion fueled the inspiration for my biggest initiative to date, Socktober. For the past 5 years, during the month of October, I collects socks for shelters and people living on the streets. During this pandemic i have still found ways to support our homeless friends and shelters.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m such a foodie, and love dining in Downtown Detroit.
One of my favorite places to eat downtown is Joe Muer which is off the water or Savannah Blue who has great lemon drops. Sitting by the water is so relaxing to me, I certainly would stop by the detroit river walk or take part in a fun ride on Detroit Peddle Bar. The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
