Hi Erik, how do you think about risk?
When I reflect on the concept of risk, both in my professional endeavors and personal life, I view it as an indispensable element for growth and achievement. It’s akin to diving into the deep end of life; without taking the plunge, one can never truly experience the full spectrum of possibilities and opportunities.

In my career trajectory, risk-taking has been an intrinsic part of my journey. Every significant milestone or breakthrough I’ve achieved has stemmed from a calculated risk. I firmly believe that success is intertwined with stepping out of one’s comfort zone and embracing uncertainty. It’s about analyzing the situation meticulously, weighing the potential outcomes, and making informed decisions, even if they entail a degree of risk.

One framework that has been instrumental for me in navigating risks is the S.M.A.R.T Goals approach—ensuring that every risk I undertake is Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, and Timely. This methodology provides a structured roadmap, allowing me to pursue opportunities with clarity and purpose, minimizing unforeseen pitfalls along the way.

For me, risk-taking isn’t synonymous with impulsivity or recklessness; rather, it’s about operating within a framework of principles that lead to success. Whether in my professional pursuits or personal endeavors, I strive to approach risks with a blend of pragmatism and ambition, ensuring that each step forward is deliberate and well-considered.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
My career in hospitality and healthcare facilities management has been nothing short of a remarkable odyssey, one that began with humble beginnings and a mop bucket in hand. Over the past 16 years, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of dedication, perseverance, and a relentless pursuit of excellence.

From those early days as a trainee, I’ve ascended the ranks to become a pivotal executive, shaping the growth trajectory of two of the world’s foremost hospitality providers. Today, as the Sales VP/Director of Strategic Partnerships at Aramark Facilities Management, I oversee a staggering $350+ million-dollar portfolio, steering high-profile partnerships with industry titans such as Anheuser Busch, Ebay, and esteemed sports franchises like the San Diego Padres and the Houston Astros.

Yet, amidst the towering achievements, it’s during my tenure as a hospital EVS Director amidst the tumult of COVID-19 that I find my proudest moments. Ensuring a safe, pristine, and nurturing environment for both patients and staff amid unprecedented challenges stands as a testament to the unwavering commitment to excellence that defines my professional ethos.

But make no mistake, this journey has been anything but easy. In an industry long dominated by middle-aged Caucasian males, carving out a space as an African American male has demanded resilience, fortitude, and an unyielding determination to defy stereotypes and shatter barriers. For years, I’ve grappled with the relentless pressure to prove my worth, to validate my presence at the table. However, through sheer grit, determination, and a steadfast belief in my abilities, I’ve transcended the confines of expectation and forged a path defined by merit and accomplishment.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
When it comes to showing my best friend the ultimate Southern California experience, I have an itinerary that guarantees a week packed with fun, excitement, and unforgettable memories!

Day 1: Beach Bliss at Newport Beach Pier
We’ll kick off our adventure with a quintessential SoCal experience – a day at Newport Beach Pier. From soaking up the sun to catching glimpses of majestic whales in the distance, there’s no shortage of excitement here. And when hunger strikes, we’ll indulge in mouthwatering delights at one of the area’s amazing eateries.

Day 2: Courtside Thrills in LA
In the City of Angels, sports reign supreme, so we’ll dive headfirst into the action. Whether it’s cheering on the Lakers at the Staples Center, catching a Dodger game at Chavez Ravine, or soaking in the atmosphere at the Colosseum with the USC Trojans, every moment promises adrenaline-pumping excitement.

Day 3: Culinary Delights
No trip to SoCal would be complete without savoring its diverse culinary scene. We’ll treat our taste buds to a gastronomic journey at Catch LA, where every dish is a work of art. And of course, we can’t pass up the chance to indulge in the legendary flavors of Roscoe’s Chicken & Waffles or the authentic Mexican cuisine at Mama Por Dios.

Day 4-7: Theme Park Extravaganza
The thrill-seeker in us demands an adventure-filled visit to the region’s iconic theme parks. From the magic of Disneyland Resort to the cinematic wonders of Universal Studios, and the heart-pounding rides at Six Flags Magic Mountain, every day will be an adrenaline-fueled escapade.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
At the forefront stands Heidy, my rock and biggest cheerleader. Her unwavering belief in me fuels my courage to take on challenges and chase my dreams. She’s not just my wife; she’s the anchor that steadies me in the stormy seas of life.

Then there’s Jay Cohen, the brother fate bestowed upon me back in high school. We’re more than friends; we’re partners in mischief, the real-life Bad Boys. His relentless drive and unwavering encouragement have always pushed me to strive for greatness, no matter the odds.

And let’s not forget Ken Holdman, who started as a direct report but evolved into something much more significant—a business mentor and guiding light. His wisdom and guidance have been instrumental in shaping my approach to risk-taking, instilling in me the confidence to pursue opportunities with boldness and determination.

Together, they form the pillars of my support system, providing the emotional foundation upon which I build my aspirations and navigate the turbulent waters of risk. With their unwavering presence by my side, I am emboldened to face whatever challenges come my way, knowing that I am not alone in the journey towards success.
