We had the good fortune of connecting with Erin Nicole McGinnis, LMFT and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Erin, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
“What lies behind us and what lies before us are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson I discovered this quote in High School and immediately put it on my bedroom wall, where I would see it every day. Even now, I will often reread this quote when times get tough. It is a reminder that I am more than my circumstances. It is this same idea that I bring into my therapy sessions with clients. Happiness, joy, love, contentment, and even abundance are all achieved from the inside out. Our egos would like us to believe that everything we want is somehow attainable out in the world through objects, success, or approval from others. However, if we haven’t done the internal work, we will get those things and still be unhappy and unfulfilled. This quote reminds me that regardless of the setbacks, challenges, or disappointments, my ability to love others, feel joy, and be grateful for what I have determines my fate.
What should our readers know about your business?
My business holistically treats mental health by blending western modalities with eastern philosophical and spiritual concepts. The idea of this blend first came to me when my mom became sick and needed a bone marrow transplant. When first diagnosed, they said she only had six months to live, and there was nothing that anyone could do. After she began practicing eastern concepts and spiritual principles, her health stopped declining at a rapid rate, giving us enough time to get a second opinion. We then went to the very best treatment facility, and she is still alive and well today. Eastern nor western medicine alone was enough, but the combination of both saved her life. After that experience, I began applying the same blend to mental health therapy with excellent results.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
LA has so much to offer. I love showing people from out of town all of the things there are to do here. First, I always see if there is a good show playing at the Hollywood Bowl, Greek Theatre, or Ace Hotel. I love Disneyland and Six Flags, and having visitors from out of town is always a fun excuse to go. I also think the Magic Castle is one of the most unique places to visit in LA. In the summer, I love seeing a movie in the Hollywood Forever Cemetery. I live in Venice, so I usually take people to my favorite local spots; Gjelina, Tasting Kitchen, Gjusta, Sugarfish, Little Fatty, and then Jenni’s or Salt and Straw for dessert. On Sunday, I will often take people to the Mar Vista or Santa Monica Farmer’s Market. The trip wouldn’t be complete without spending at least one day going to Malibu and taking the scenic drive out to Neptune’s Net. The rest of the time would be spent in nature, either hanging out on the beach or going hiking.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am an avid reader, and there are too many books to mention that have inspired me along the way. However, one book that stands out as the most influential is Women Who Run with the Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estes. Her writing helped me reconnect to my inner knowing and instinctual self. This book has also helped me become a better therapist and help other women reconnect with their intuition. On a personal note, I have to give a big shoutout to my amazing husband. We just had a baby, and I wouldn’t be able to run a business and be a mom without all of his love and support.
