We had the good fortune of connecting with Errine Guillermo and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Errine, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I’m a risk taker. I believe in, ” If it challenges you, it will change you.” Every risk is worth taking! If I failed, I would take a step back, learn from my mistakes, then move forward. Sometimes, it’s the risks you take that separates you from the rest.

Every phase of my career involved risks. I was 19 (2005) when I finished beauty school, and almost every high school teacher/counselor laughed at my dream of opening a salon. I was in the law and government program and ideally what everyone thought I should pursue was criminal justice. I mean, now looking back at it, being a hairdresser or owning my own beauty business wasn’t as well respected as it is today. I worked under numerous master stylist, until eventually I felt ready to take the risk of opening on my own shop. I followed my passion of doing hair, regardless of what anyone said. Did I question myself? absolutely. Did it stop me from pursuing my dream, Hell no! Each risk I’ve made throughout my life has made me evolve, grow, learn and has taught me gratitude. There’s definitely a bunch of blood, sweat and tears, lots of tears in the midst of all of it, but I wouldn’t change it for the world.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I get to be creative every single day at work. Every person who sits in my chair has customized hair by me. I think I am the most proud of being completely honest with my clients, and having their full trust. It’s true when they say that Hairstylist are also therapist. I get to build relationships with people I enjoy spending time with, all while i’m working. I have practiced my craft since I was 13 and I have never been bored. I love making people feel and look their best. Giving clients new makeovers, pep talks, advice, and just a boost of confidence is what excites me.

This year marks 12 years since i’ve opened my business. Ive gone through different team members, clients… friends. I’ve learned how to market without social media and now learning with social media. I Have had an array of setbacks, comebacks and breakdowns. I’ve even moved my business into a new city because the first location didn’t work out for me. It was challenging but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. During the Pandemic I even considered downsizing, but never closing. I’m a fighter, a problem solver, if something doesn’t work i’ll find another solution. Last but not least, I owe my success to my clients. They have kept me going through the most questionable times. Without them in my chair, its just wasted talent.

The lessons I’ve learned along the way is that I will never know enough. To keep striving and learning new things every day and to always surround yourself with mentors and people who have good intentions. The only competition you should be in, is with yourself. Make friends with other business owners and be supportive of others. Respect everyones path and at the same time protect your peace. The pandemic has definitely made me change my ways. Sometimes, doing whats best for the business isn’t always the best for others, but always trust your gut. Some of the most difficult choices i’ve made has made me the success I am today.

I want the world to know that owning a business is an emotional rollercoaster, but to not fear the challenges and risks that they will bring. Read books, listen to podcasts and constantly evolve. Always be honest with yourself and never ever think you can’t ask for help. To use each failure as a lesson, and to re write the script as many times until you get it right.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Tough, during a pandemic i’d probably want to take them on a hike. Fryman canyon is my go to, to clear my thoughts and to just enjoy the views. They would definitely stop at my salon and sit in my chair while I worked on some magic for their hair. A stop at my favorite local coffee spot, coffee roaster. Some sushi and Sake at Izakaya, bbq at Boneyard Bistro, drinks/people watch at the Woodman, pub food and amazing cocktails at Laurel Tavern and Firefly for a nice sit down. If universal studios were open i’d be there for some rides and entertainment. If any of the farmers markets were open, that would also be in the itinerary. Axe throwing and/or rage room would be somewhere in between, Shopping the boutique stores on Ventura Blvd and stopping for boba or ice cream anywhere would make it complete.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Family. My Grandma, Mom, Dad and my sister. They have always allowed me to follow my dreams. They have been behind me every step of the way rooting for my success.

They never questioned my abilities, nor ever persuaded me to go in any other direction. My daughter Kylee, who pushes me everyday to be better, to keep pushing the limits and to stay kind no matter the circumstances. The true light during my hardest days. My boyfriend, who allows me to be me and supports every crazy idea I ever have. They are all the backbones to my success. I have to say, with their love and continuous support, it has certainly made my most difficult decisions easier.
